My Autobiography

I was born on April 8th, 1993 and adopted by my people, Georgia and Paul, at the age of 17 weeks. I lived with them in Pacifica at Milagra Ridge. I'm a Scottish Terrier and I helped out as a volunteer for the National Park Service at Milagra Ridge. I greeted people and kept track of the small animals that burrow in the ground: the gophers, moles, meadow voles. I wanted to keep track of the skunks, but my people wouldn''t let me. I loved trying to chase the little critters that live at the ridge. But, I had to be careful as it is against National Park Service rules to harass any of the animals that live in the park. I kept my people leashed when we were roaming around the park because I wanted them to be safe, and I wanted them to stay on the trails. Sometimes, I was allowed to go off the trails with volunteers to help check the plants that volunteers had planted, or to help collect native plant seeds for the Stewardship program, or to monitor invasive plants. I tried to be very careful not to step on sensitive native plants. It's really important to respect the home of all my wild friends.

I had a special friend in the park, a coyote. Sometimes at night, she would come to visit outside our deck. She was usually pretty shy during the day, but once in a while we would see her in the park and I would stand on my hind legs and wave to her.   It was pretty neat to have a wild friend but I didn't try to get too friendly.  I knew that some coyotes in the Bay Area were getting too close to people and scaring them.  I'd heard from my coyote friends that they found food around houses and so they would keep visiting the places where they found food.  The coyotes really should eat pesky little rodents instead of pet food and garbage.  I wanted all of us get along because I really liked having wild friends.

When groups came to the park, it was fun to walk around with them and learn about the plants and animals in the park. I especially liked school groups because the children would pet me.   I liked to join the park stewards on work days - except when they were working in blackberry patches, the thorns are sharp and would stick in my feet. The folks in the Park Service Stewardship Program were very special friends.

I was a really lucky dog to live in such a great place with so many good friends - animal and human.

I liked to go to the beach.  When we went to Coastways Beach,  when I was a pup, I chased the waves and dug in the sand.  I would get really wet and sandy.  Sometimes I got to walk at Linda Mar beach with a little boy named Mikey. He used to dig in the sand and I helped him. I really liked digging when I was a pup.

Here's a picture of me at the beach.

At CSM, I liked to chase the squirrels and walk around the edge of the reflecting pools.  Sometimes I even met some of the professors and students who petted me. I had some really nice friends at CSM.

I really liked people, but, I'm wasn't always nice to other dogs. I wanted other dogs to respect me - so when I met them, I would growl ferociously to tell them that "I'm the alpha dog". Since I'm rather short, I would get very ferocious with big dogs to let them know that I'm a tough dog. Sometimes they didn't like that!

It was a great life being a small black dog with good people and lots of friends.

On November 21, 2002, I was very sick and my people were very sad. I decided it was time to make my way to the Rainbow Bridge. I said good bye to my Mam in the afternoon. She didn't want me to leave. And early in the evening, my dear Dad, held me in his arms as I began my journey to the Bridge. I will wait for them there with many friends who have gone before me.
