Below are actual pictures taken on a couple of trips. I thought these would be interesting to people who have never had bear encounters and will be able to see what happens when a bear gets your food.
| Here is what happens when you counter balance. This youngster had gotten the bags and was enjoying itself with not a soul around. Fortunately, it still had a fear of humans and was easily chased off. But most people are not so lucky, once a bear has your food it will defend it. We snapped the picture first and tossed a few rocks as a test, which caused it to run away. | ![]() |

| This is a great example of bear scat after getting a counter balance. We passed two groups headed back to Florence Lake and out, because they were counter balancing and got completely cleaned out. We figured this was the scat from that hit. It is difficult to pull details from the picture, but most of this scat was composed of plastic bags, Power Bar wrappers and a Mountian House bag with the peas still undigested |
| This is a bear foraging naturally, we watched it scrape the bugs off the trees and scoop them into it mouth as they flew in the air. The picture was taken at Junction Meadow, in Kings Canyon, in an area where there are bear boxes. We watched it for about 15 minutes befor it took of into woods |

| This is what happens when a bear does get your counter balance. This was from the hit at Sunrise Lakes. When we cleaned up the mess, we found 6 Butterscotch candies and 4 Beef sticks untouched. Everything else had been ripped open, and if not eaten, slobbered on. Fortunately we only had 8 miles to get back to the car. But, three out of the four people were from out of state and paid airfare, etc to do this trip, only to have it cut short by two days. |
