Great Southern Overland Route of 1849 continues as dirt road, the pavement continues as Sweeny Pass Rd
S2 has two major parts: The Northern part is San Felipe Rd between Hwy 79 and Hwy 78. San Felipe makes a beautiful 80 km loop with Montezuma Grade Rd, Hwy 78 and Yaqui Pass Rd. San Felipe Rd has a nice wide shoulder.
The Southern part (South of Hwy 78) is Great Southern Overland Route of 1849, followed by Sweeny Pass Rd and Imperial Hwy. S2 ends at Interstate Hwy 8 in Ocotillo. This section is about 80 km long and a features a several moderate passes: Box Canyon (coming from the South, 200 m), Cambell Grade (coming from the South 100 m at 8-10%), and Sweeny Pass (both directions: 200 m from the North, 300 m from the South).
Starting in Ocotillo, this is also the route for the Wells Fargo Stagecoach Century Ride. This is a very quite road. Nevertheless you find also several general stores along the route for re-stocking.
