The ultimate long-distance cyclocross ride:

Background

Long distance cyclocross borrows many of the elements of classical cyclocross, specifically the bike, the mix of dirt and pavement, the run-up, and most importantly the pain and the fun. There are however no man-made barriers and the course is not fenced (you better know how to read a map), and of course, the distance is longer and the hills are higher.

It's not a novel concept at all. In fact all of the early bicycle races (not held on a track) were long distance cyclocross as there were no paved roads in the late 19th century and the first decade of 20th one. And riders had to deal with all kind of obstacles and specifically mud.

In the UK, there is a popular long distance cyclocross race, Three Peaks, held since 1961. In the US, there a couple of races: the Iron Cross in Pennsylvania and the Grasshopper Adventure Series in California.
