Part VI: Weed to Burney: 102 miles, on dirt roads, circling around Mt Shasta and through lava land

There are no services for the most part of this segment, so make sure that you stock up well in Weed. You leave Weed on Hwy 97 which has a wide shoulder (this is the only paved stretch in segment) and start climbing. After a few miles you turn right into Military Pass Rd, a dirt road, and the climbing continues. The pass is at 6000 feet (1800 m).
Military Pass Rd at Hwy 97 After a long downhill, you cross Hwy 89 and here things get a little tricky. To keep navigation simple, go East for abou 3 miles on Hwy 89. The turn right into Strouts Meadows Rd which becomes Grizzly Peak Rd. Grizzly Peak Rd you take up up to Summit Lake Rd. Once you reach Summit Lake Rd you follow a sharpely edged rim with stunning views in all directions. The top over Summit lake Rd is at 5600 feet (1850 m), 2250 feet (750 m) up from Hwy 89.
Lake Britton From there it's all downhill to the McArthur-Burney Falls Memorial State Park and then just a few miles to Burney via Black Ranch Rd.
