Selected Keirin World Championship Finals

In March 2008, I did my first Keirin race and liked it a lot. So I started to educated myself by watching videos on YouTube. I put together videos from the World Champion finals I could find.

World Championships 2006 Bordeaux

Results
1. Flag of the Netherlands  Theo Bos  (NED)
2. Flag of Spain  Jos? Antonio Escuredo  (ESP)
3. Flag of France  Arnaud Tournant  (FRA)
Comments
Escuredo attacks and takes the lead as soon as the motor pulls off. With 400m to go, Bos comes over the top, using the banking for accelaration and taking off like a rocket. He quickly creates 15-20m gap and everybody else is sprinting for Silver only.
Within the field, we have a bit bumping-people-up-the-track action.

World Championships 2001 Antwerp

Results
1. Flag of Australia  Ryan Bayley  (AUS)
2. Flag of France  Laurent Gan?  (FRA)
3. Flag of Germany  Jens Fiedler  (GER)
Comments
Looks like a warm-up ride at first, single file until 1.5 laps to go. With 200m to go, the 3rd riders crashes and takes the three behind with him. Jens Fiedler runs injured and carrying the remains of his bike to the finish line securing the bronze medal.

World Championships 1997 Perth

Results
1. Flag of France  Fr?d?ric Magne  (FRA)
2. Flag of South Africa  Jean-Pierre Van Zyl  (RSA)
3. Flag of the United States  Marty Wayne Nothstein  (USA)
Comments
The actions starts as soon as the motor pulls off. Jens Fiedler goes to the front and counters an attack by moving up the track. One lap later, almost the same situation, Fiedler now riding second wheel counters an attack again by moving up.
Then with one lap to go, Magne takes off, quickly building a 10-15m gap, and brings it home. Italy's Roberto Chiappa was second across the line and Germany's Jens Fiedler third, but both were demoted for employing illegal tactics.

World Championships 1996 Manchester

Results
1. Flag of the United States  Marty Wayne Nothstein  (USA)
2. Flag of Australia  Gary Neiwand  (AUS)
3. Flag of France  Fr?d?ric Magne  (FRA)
Comments
Nothstein is behind the motor, with two to go Magne goes to the front. Nothstein tries to pass Magne a number of times and Magne always bumps him up. Only on the final meters, Nothstein and Neiwand can pass Magne.
This is also the first (chronologically) final with only six riders. The UCI reduced the number down to six from nine some time in the early nineties for safety reasons.

World Championships 1990 Maebashi

Results
1. Flag of Germany  Michael H?bner  (GER)
2. Flag of Belgium  Michel Vaarten  (BEL)
3. Flag of Italy  Claudio Golinelli  (ITA)
Comments
Here we got nine riders in the final and there's a lot of jockeying for positions behind the motor. The Autralian (Page?) goes clear. With 100 m to go he counters an attack by Varten, bumping him up track. y doing so he's leaving the sprinter's lane. Huebner moves into the open poll lane and is about to pass the Aussie, who moves back into the sprinter's lane. Huebner cross the line second but wins Gold after the Aussie is disqualified.

World Championships 1982 Leicester

Results
1. Flag of Canada  Gordon Singleton  (CAN)
2. Flag of Australia  Danny Clark  (AUS)
3. Flag of Japan  T. Kitamura  (JPN)
Comments
There's a lot of elbow work between Singleton and the German rider. While he untangles, Singleton almost touches the wheel of the leading Clark. There's some physical thing going on between the Italian and the Belgium further in the back. At the end Singleton passes Clark on the on the home stretch and bring home a clear victory.
There's a slow motion at the end of the clip discussing all the elbow work.
