Notes

The Many's (there are numerous ways to spell the name; Magny, Manney, Manna, Maney, Manne, etc.) were orignally French Huguenots from the Province of Saintonge, France. The first Many settlers in New York were three brothers: Jean, Jacques and Jeremie. The village in France from which they came was Meschers a seaport town of about 1100 inhabitants.

There is record of Jacques and Jeremie settling in the "ill-fated" Huguenot colony at Narragansett, Rhode Island, in 1687. Jacques' name is mentioned often in the records of the French Church there, for he was an elder. The record says that Jacques asked to be relieved of his duties as elder in 1689. He moved to New York and is so mentioned in the records of the French Church there in 1692.

Jeremie also moved to New York; infact, by 1691 all the Narragansett Colony but two or three families had left. The climate and soil there had been good for raising crops; however, it has been said that they abandoned the colony because of difficulties with the indians, the English inhabitants and conflicts of land titles. Additionally, it was stated that many members of the colony were deported to England and there destoned to become English citizens.

It is from Jean Many, who with his other brothers, had been sea captains dealing in the rum and slave trade in the West Indies, that we are descended. It is questionable whether he settled first at the Narragansett Colony, as his brothers did, before going to New York City.

Jean Many married Jeanne Stadt Machet, of New Rochelle, about 1694, in New York City. Her father, Jean Machet, was a ship carpenter, first from LaTremblade in Saintonge, and then pursued his trade from the seaport town of Bordeaux just prior to leaving France. He wrote, "We left our goods, our furniture and our clothes. I and Jeanne Thomas, my wife, and Pierre, Jean, Jeanne and Marianne, our children, for the sake of our religion, fled from persecution only saving our bodies." They settled first in Oxford, Massachusetts, then moved to New Rochelle. They apparently fled from France around 1686.
