My name is Joel Windmiller, otherwise known as the Highwayman. I have been a highway historian and roadmap collector for the past 30 years.  I live in Carmichael, California in the heart of the Central Valley, just a few miles east of Sacramento.

Routes Completed (California)

In California with 240 routes and 16,796 miles of state controled roadway it breaks down to this: 7 are US routes, 24 are Interstate routes, and the 209 left are State Highways. I have completed in the boxes below the following number of routes.

As of June 5, 2000 , I have traveled a total of 235 of California's 240 signed routes, and a total of 16,110 miles of California's 16,796 miles of state maintained highway.

40_old_shield.gif (3690 bytes) US 40 once went from San Francisco to the Nevada State line on roughly what is present I-80. It was completely decommissioned in 1967.

Alternate US 50 is a route used when US 50 is closed due to fire or weather related conditions. Alternate US 50 goes from US 50 at Pollock Pines to SR-88 at Iron Mountain Road. Continues with SR-88 to Picketts Junction turn left on SR-89 into Lake Tahoe.

US 50 once went from the US 40-101 junction in San Francisco to Stockton US 99 to Sacramento. Then turned east into the Sierra Nevada to Lake Tahoe. US 50 from Oakland to Tracy was once US 48. After the decommissioning of US 48 in the 30's
