The Adopt-A-Highway program, started in 1989 to clean our roadsides of litter graffiti, plant trees and wildflowers, and to maintain our roadside rest areas. Caltrans provides all volunteers with litter bags, hard hats, and gloves at no cost. Volunteers  are recognized for their contribution by the placement of a roadside sign.

*The program's value can be measured not only in financial savings, but in the dedicated hours that thousands of Californians have donated to keep the Golden State beautiful for visitors and residents alike.

In the Map above you can see the section of Highway I have adopted for clean-up. My section begins just east of Sorensens, notice the red triangle and road after crossing the Carson River. My section ends at the Highway Maintance Station in Woodfords. Map Above Courtsey of AAA.

Photo Above taken in West Carson River Canyon along State Highways 88 and 89 in Alpine County near the town of Woodfords elevation of 5,670 ft.

*Since 1989 more than 120,000 Californians from over 6,000 groups have cleaned 6,000 miles of California roadsides. In the process, the Adopt-A-Highway volunteers have collected a staggering 540,000 cubic yards of trash, enough litter to fill a line of dump trucks, bumper to bumper, from San Francisco to San Luis Obispo.

In the spring of 1999 I volunteered to clean-up a section of highway, with several sections I wanted to chose already taken I finally chose a section in Alpine County in West Carson River Canyon. My section starts near Hope Valley Resort at milemarker 15.0 to 19.6. at Woodfords.

I hope after reading this you might consider adopting your own section of highway. With everyone's help we can make our highways cleaner and more beautiful for all motorist to enjoy.
