November 4 and 5, 1999 Subject: Stolen US 50 Ocean City, Maryland Sign Yes, but when did you last see it? I looked last Saturday, and didn't see it. (I always try to make a point of noticing it when I drive along that section of road, as I have seen the sign on the other end in Ocean City.) Admittedly, I may have missed it. ...I didn't notice our "Ocean City 3073 Miles" US 50 sign that had been posted at the eastbound "split" of I-80 amd Business I-80 in West Sacramento when I drove by the other evening. Has this sign disappeared? Or am I just mistaken? I suspect then, that it was stolen. Unfortunately, I don't know who to contact at Caltrans District 3 to have the repair made. Dan |

28, 1999 Joel- You're web page is outstanding. The blooper section is outstanding. I have seen signs like this for years and what a great way of displaying them. I live in Sacramento and Business 80, which is a blooper in and of itself, caught my attention recently with what I consider a new blooper. On northbound Hwy 99, prior to the interchange with US 50, there is a sign on a single post that shows a symbol for an airport and underneath it has "USE", Business 80 shield, and "WEST". The only trouble with this assemblage is that with the recent overhead sign changes for the interchange, there is no longer any indication of how to get to Business 80 west! Have you seen this sign? I'm sorry I don't have a picture of it but I thought this was a sign that belonged on your blooper page. Thanks again for the opportunity to enjoy an outstanding web page. Dominic Ielati |

Here is a zip file that contains 2 photos from around Sacramento. I don't know if they would apply to your blooper/oddity page but since I work downtown, these were easy to get pictures of. The I-5 N/S shields are on 3rd St SB just before L Street. The I-5 albino/99 sign is on 5th Street NB between N Street and Capitol Mall. These photos were taken in March of this year. I have some other pictures from around downtown if you are interested.
It is amazing how many signs are left from when 3rd St and 5th St were signed as Highway 99 in the 1960's. There are still signs for Highway 70 downtown, which ends at the 99/70 wye in Sutter County. I still see claims that it is co-signed after 99 splits with I-5 in N. Natomas but all the 70 shields have a "TO" sign attached. There are no 70 shields southbound on that section of Hwy 99.

Here are some more recent photos. You are welcome to use them on any of your pages. 3rd & P St - March 2000 - This is in advance of the P Street on ramps to I-5 and to Bus 80-Hwy 50. I guess they never got around to changing all of the I-80 shields. 4 shields - February 2000 - This is at 35th St & Stockton Blvd & the entrance to Hwy 50 west. This is the only sign assemblage that I know of in Sacramento that has 4 shields on it.
5th St & P St - March 2000 - This is in advance of the P Street on ramps to I-5 and to Bus 80-Hwy 50.
5th St (old) - March 2000 - This is the albino I-5 shield just south of Capitol Mall.
Capitol Mall - February 2000 - It is amazing how visible this sign is on post cards of the capitol. At least they got the I-5 on there. Hwy 70 is a good 20 miles from here. Maybe they kept Marysville as the control city because they want people to be able to find the District 3 office. My opinion is green out the 70 sign and put the I-5 shield on the BGS.
Folsom & Watt -March 2000 - Just a cool looking sign left over from the late 60's early 70's when Folsom Blvd was US 50. At that time there was no S Watt Ave so you either turned left or stayed on Folsom Blvd.
SF-Reno-Stockton - April 2000 - 65th St northbound at Hwy 50 west on ramp. I do not know of any other signs in Sacramento that still list Stockton as a control city. I have seen them south of Elk Grove but everything in Sacramento lists Fresno as the control city.
Stockton Blvd Southbound - February 2000 - Stockton Blvd/35th St/US 50 west on ramp. Another stray I-80 shield.
