District 4 Bloopers E-Mails

Derek Law writes on November 15, 1999

Hey there, what's up?  You have a great site, and I liked the bloopers page.  However, on the page about the Cypress Freeway I found a mistake.  You stated that the Embarcadero Freeway in San Francisco also collapsed during the 1989 earthquake.  The 480 freeway didn't collapse.  It was damaged, immediately closed after the quake, and was torn down in 1991.  If you'd like, I have several pictures of it.  Just thought I'd let you know.

That is a oddity with the East 80 and West 580 signage, but in some ways what else can you do on that section of the Eastshore? I know it's confusing, but that's the way it is. Take a look at the section of Interstate 280/Interstate 680 interchange in San Jose. As you're traveling from San Jose Downtown on Interstate 280, it's signed as SOUTH 280, until you reach the US101 interchange, and then the freeway is then signed as NORTH 680. Talk about a direction change!

Greetings...I don't have a picture of it just yet but I will get one if you

would so desire.

In the SF Bay Area on I-680 Northbound at the SR-4 Junction in Pleasant Hill...there are three signs...4 East, 4 West, and one that simply says  "Benicia." This third sign obviously is intended to be "Benicia" with an  I-680 shield but the shield IS NOT THERE...IT IS BLANK.

Like I said...if you'd like a picture...please let me know.

OH...just thought of one more...

On Hegenberger Road West in Oakland just after the International Blvd/East 14th Street crossing there is a sign for State Route 17 shortly before  approaching the Oakland Coliseum. As I'm sure you're aware SR-17 is I-880 in   that area but no one ever bothered to change the sign!! LOL!!

Geoff Gommerman, he who drives CONSTANTLY and has perfect opportunity to see

these blunders. :-)

howdy joel,

In the last few days I discovered the wide world of roadgeek sites and info on the net, including your site. I'm originally from San Francisco, so the pics on your site brought back many memories of laughing at Caltrans' mistakes. Saw a few references to "control cities" in the email section- do you happen to know the reasoning behind why some cities are listed as road destinations? My whole life growing up in Marin County I could never figure out why US 101 north headed to Eureka, when places such as Santa Rosa are much closer and I assume more people head there when using the road, especially due to the heinous commute.

One more question that I saw on the email page- why is it that California is the only state I know of that does not post a state wide network of mile markers and exit numbers on it's highways?  I just moved up to Seattle and am getting acquainted with all the roads up here, if I see any bloopers in my travels I'll try to send a few pictures your way.

thanks for the great site and keep up the good work...

Here's a blooper pic for you...there's been ongoing continuous work on SR-242  (widening FINALLY). Anyway this is a pic of one side of the freeway entrance  to 242 from the corner of Concord Ave and Market St in Concord. It's another  example of someone forgetting to put "CALIFORNIA" over the top of the 242 but  this one is BETTER because it's not quite the right shape either and the 242  looks different as well.

Hope you can use it...

Joel-

I love this webpage. I noticed this past weekend that the Interstate 152 sign near Santa Nella on southbound I-5 has been corrected and now has a correct California state 152 shield. Keep up the good work!

Greetings...

Got a couple new bloopers for you on a recent trip to LA and back.  On southbound I-5 10 miles north of the NORTHERN junction with SR-33 is a   sign where the "33" has no shield around it. (SR-33 crosses I-5 twice). The second is on northbound I-5 and actually is represented by more than just  the one sign I took a pic of. I would call it an oddity that the mileage to  SF is one mile more than the mileage for SAC but they list SF above SACs. All you need to know is illustrated in the pics (and they're really good ones  too). I pulled over to take them rather than "daredeviling" it. One pic is  attached to this mail...the other will be in a later e-mail. By the way, if you're so inclined...my friend (Katlyn Thompson) and I would  love to be recognized in your page by name. Just an idea. ;-)

Oddity: Photo taken EB 134 near the juction with Golden State Freeway I-5.

Notice the white 134 shield I know of only three signs in the whole state to

still have the old white state shield on them. The second sign is on the

median of I-5, and the third one is at the US-101-SR-37 interchange in

Navato.

It is also odd because it is Novato.

Cheers

Greetings...

I like what you've done with the page...makes it a bit more organized and I  think the map links are way cool. Thanks for the name recognition for that  one picture but my best friend Katlyn Thompson is actually the one that  should have credit for that picture as well as the one taken in Benicia of   the green 680 shield. When you have a chance if you could slide her name in   their for me that would be great. The two pictures I most recently sent you are ones that I personally took so when you get around to those then that's where my name should come up.

Just trying to help all concerned.
