Debra Dolsberry grew up in Leavenworth, Kansas, and attended Kansas State University where she received degrees in Computer Science and Philosophy. She worked as a systems programmer in Irvine, California from 1975 to 1986. She married Ira Pohl in 1986, and Laura arrived on New Year's Day in 1989. Ira is a professor of Computer Science at the University of California at Santa Cruz. Debra currently takes art classes and does technical editing for Ira's books and lectures.

For relaxation, she sews, reads, dances, paints on silk and dreams of vacationing around the world. She has thus far visited Andora, Anguilla, Bahamas, Belgium, Eluthera, England, France, Germany, Hawaii, Honduras, Israel, Italy, Japan, Marinique, Mexico, Monaco, Monseratt, Nevis, New Zealand, Puerto Rico, Raratonga, Roatan, Saba, Scotland, Spain, St. Bartholomy, St. Barts, St. John's, St. Kitts, St. Marteen, Sweden, Switzerland, The Netherlands, and the Virgin Islands.
