Just
some thoughts on the music world as I know it today (February 16, 2001):
What’s with bands
kicking out long time band members?
Original member Don Felder, lead guitarist, was kicked out of the
Eagles? What does one have to do to get
kicked out of the Eagles? They’ve got
drug smuggling Glen Frey, Statutory Rapist Don Henley, and the always-deranged
Joe Walsh. Was Felder too quiet and not
controversial enough? This guy was the
masterman behind all of the Eagles more upbeat tunes like Life in the Fast
Line. Good luck Don. Maybe that Saturday morning TV Show that you
hosted in the early ‘80’s will call you back.
And what about KISS
kicking out Peter Criss? Why would a
band that is retiring have to kick someone out? I suppose it’s so the former member can’t use the band name, or
be involved in any of the future business ventures. Catman, I hear the Eagles former guitarist is looking for work.
Speaking of KISS, I
finally had the opportunity to see “Detroit Rock City”. For you non-KISS fans, this was a movie that
came out last year about the adventures of 4 teenagers in Ohio in 1978 trying
to see KISS in Detroit. This flick was
excellent! You don’t have to be a KISS
fan to enjoy this. If you are into
nostalgia, ala “that 70’s Show”, then you’ll appreciate the impact of KISS in
the 70’s. Cheesy references to KISS
songs (Beth, Christine) make this even more classic.
And segueing to “that
70’s show”, I recently received the “Authorized Greatest Hits of Cheap Trick”,
which the theme song to “70’s show” is on.
Another thing I noticed is that the recording of “Ain’t That A Shame” is
different from the one on my “Live at Budokan” CD. Interestingly, when “Live at Budokan” came out in the late 70’s,
my brother had purchased an import copy.
This was unique in the fact that the vinyl was a good ¼” thick. So valuable, my brother taped it the album
so he/we would never have to play this album again.
Well, being the up and
coming drummer I wanted to be, I used to play to that tape all of the
time. The drum solo for “Ain’t That a
Shame” is one of the coolest ever, so I played it and memorized it.
So when “Budokan”
finally made it to CD, I purchased it.
But surprisingly, the “Aint” version was different. I mean I must have listened to the original
at least 1000 times, and when I got the CD, I’m thinking “what idiot forgot to
mix in the old album version”.
Well, over 20 years
later, the “Authorized Greatest Hits” has the original album version of “Ain’t
that A Shame”.
I
can now rest easy.
