The supernova has been discovered on 27th September 2004 by Stefano Moretti of Ravenna, Italy (http://it.geocities.com/gruppoastrofiliforlivesi/privato).

This image was taken three days after the discovery from Montebello Open Space Preserve near Palo Alto, CA by Jürgen Wolf and Dietmar Lilienthal. The magnitudes of the three brighter stars surrounding the SN are given in visual magnitudes.
