After an opening reception on Sunday, July 16, at the Hotel Garden, we met at Central European University for a series of introductory lectures, including a mini-language class, Survival Hungarian, taught by Júlia Abonyi and brought back for a second day by popular demand. The commute between our hotel (which is in Buda) and CEU (which is east of the Danube in Pest) was 45 minutes one way by tram, subway and foot. Visit the web site for CEU Medieval Studies.
While in Budapest, some members of our group took advantage of an excursion on the Danube to see the cobble-stoned artisans colony of Szentandre. To view the large version of a photograph, just click once on the small image. Click on the Back button of your web browser to return to the web page.
Lectures at CEU were followed by visits to local research resources in Budapest. In addition to CEU itself, we visited these places in Budapest:
Budapest Historical Museum
ELTE (the National University) library, manuscript department
Joint ELTE-CEU medieval studies library
Hungarian National Archives
Library of the Museum of Fine Arts
National Gallery
National Museum
National Szecheny (library)
Musicological Institute of the National Academy of Sciences
Parliament Building, which contains the Royal jewels
For a history of the Parliament Building and of Hungary itself, plus some beautiful photos of the buildings features, visit Parliament.
At each institution we were given a tour and description of the holdings by the curator or librarian, sometimes assisted by a CEU faculty member who translated the information into English.
