Telc is one of the best preserved old towns of Moravia. It dates from the twelfth century when the first houses were built on reclaimed dry ground between three artificial ponds. The ponds were used for defense as well as a source of carp, a Christmas dinner favorite of the region. The town, built west of a thirteenth-century castle, was granted urban priveleges in the 1350s.
A Gothic noble residence and two churches were built at the end of the fourteenth century. After a fire in 1530, the town houses were rebuilt in Renaissance and early Baroque style. The Gothic residence was converted into a Renaissance palace with a the splendid interior which reflects the richness of its Italian counterparts. This is largely the form of the town as it is seen today.
