Golden reliquary of St. Ladislaus

Gyor

Golden reliquary of St. Ladislaus, king of Hungary (d. 1192) houses his skull in the Gyor cathedral

The head-reliquary of St. Ladislaus is first mentioned in 1273. As with many creations of the Middle Ages, it was partially or totally destroyed and subsequently rebuilt, sometimes more than once, so that the present form is not what originally existed. The reliquary in its current form was brought to Gyor for safekeeping around 1565, though the crown was apparently damaged and had to be made anew in 1600. It was hidden in different places from the Turks in 1683-1684, but has remained in Gyor since 1700.
