Constructed in the latter thirteenth century by a bishop from Veszprém and refortified in 1544, Sümeg Castle was strong enough to withstand the attacks of the Ottomans and became the seat of the bishopric of Veszprém for 150 years. It was blown up, however, in 1713 in revenge against the insurgents in the War of Independence against the Hapsburgs. The ruins were excavated and restored in 19571964, and today actors entertain visitors with scenes of medieval court life. For some more photographs, visit Sümeg Castle.
