The Benedictine abbey of Tihany is located on a peninsula on the northern side of Lake Balaton. It was founded by King Andrew I (1046-1060) who is himself buried in the crypt of the abbey. We saw its founding charter, which is the oldest surviving original charter from medieval Hungary. The abbey survived the Mongolian raids and was a center for issuing authentic charters between 1244 and 1350. Today, as with many such buildings, there is very little left of the original medieval abbey.

Following a fun-filled wine tasting in Alsóörs, we were allowed most of the next morning to relax and enjoy the private beach of the Hotel Annabella in Balatonfüred. We learned about the history of the lake, and several people took advantage of the fine weather to swim in the beautiful shallow green waters.
