The Road to Andouille
Andouille is of the long-hair variety of dachshunds,
which also are bred in smooth and wire-hair. The long is
the most elegant of the three, resembling a setter on short legs.
The smooth is the most common, and possesses the attractive
characteristics of having virtually no odor, shedding very little,
and producing little allergenic dander. At right are a typical
black-and-tan long, and a red smooth, striking a happy pose.
The wire
hair dachshund, shown at left, was obviously created by cross-breeding
smooth dachshunds with terriers, to produce a dog with the dachshunds'
stature, and the unmistakable beard of the terrier.
All three coat types have standard breed specifications,
and can compete in dog shows. All three also come in a variety
of sizes from miniature (11 pounds or fewer), to standard (15
pounds and up), with the largest dachshunds occasionally exceeding
30 pounds! Unlike many breeds, however, dachhunds of a particular
type (long, smooth, or wire) all compete against one another in
shows, regardless of size.
Andouille, shown at left with his brothers at 11 weeks
of age, was bred from champion miniature long-hairs like his mother, Emily,
striking a pose at right.
A robust
puppy, weighing 8 pounds at 4 months, he may well ultimately exceed
the breed standard for miniatures, and top out at 12 or 13 pounds.
However, even "'tweeners" (too large to be miniature,
and too small to be standard) are permitted to show.
The breed is known for intelligence, courage and stamina.
Although capable of extended periods excercise, and surprising
speed and agility, the dachshund does not require as much daily
excecise as many larger dogs and, therefore, makes an excellent
dog for the city. Andy, as we call him affectionately, is
shown here engaging in his single favorite activity: cuddling
with his adopted parents. This page was built in celebration of
our affection for him.
Andouille likes to have his belly scratched,
he
likes to be held,
like
most dachshunds he keeps his nose to the ground,
and he's becoming a voracious reader!
He especially likes books about dachshunds!
