Class Notes for Week 3

Islamic and Christian Views of the Death, Resurrection, and Deity of Jesus

  1. Continuing with Islamic Opening Arguments - Jesus NOT Crucified
    1. Per Luke 24:36-37 the disciples were terrified when Jesus was suddenly standing in their midst. They thought they had seen a spirit.
    2. Jesus didn't look like a spirit - said he wasn't a spirit, "For a spirit has no flesh and bones as you see me have."
    3. Referring to Luke 20::36 - Those resurrected are as the angles, i.e. "angelized", spiritualized, spiritual creatures. The resurrected are spirits! Jesus himself said he was NOT a spirit, therefore he was NOT resurrected.
    4. Mary Magdalene must have seen some life in Jesus when he was taken down from the cross, but didn't say anything fore to do so would have ensured His death. Swoon theory: Jesus didn't die, just fainted, then revived by his followers.
    5. Mary Magdalene found the stone moved - who moved the stone? The stone didn't need to be moved if Jesus was resurrected. A resurrected body could pass through the winding cloth and the stone.
    6. Jesus was disguised as a gardener because he was afraid of the Jews, afraid they would find him alive and kill him. If he were resurrected, he would NOT be afraid of being killed because you can only die once.
    7. Mary Magdalene wants to hug Jesus when she realizes it is Him outside the tomb. He says NO. Per Mr. Deedat Jesus didn't want to be hugged because it would hurt.

  2. Some Observations and Points Brought Out In Class
    1. Per orthodox Islam there have been three revelation from God to man:
      1. The Torah (the Penetuch; the first five books of the Old Testament; Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy) to Moses.
      2. The Injal. This is the "original" New Testament Gospels as given by God through Jesus. Per Islam, what we have today for the New Testament is a version that has been corrupted by later Christian leaders.
      3. The Qur-an. Given by God, through the angel Gabrial, to Mohammad. This is the full and final revelation of God to man.

    2. As to who moved the stone Matt. 28:2 provides a straight forward answere - An angel was sent to move the stone.
    3. "Laid to rest" - Mr. Deedat seems to imply that this means R&R, not placed in the grave which is the usual English idiom. This quote is not accurate from the KJV which reads "…where hast thou laid him,…". A more litteral reading from the Greek would be "…where did you put him,…".
    4. Mr. Deedat asks all who don't feel that Mr. McDowell doesn't make his case to invite him to "your Kingdom Halls, ot to your school hall, or anywhere you want…". There is no mention of churches, temples, cathedrals. This indicates a narrow exposure to Christianity, and therefore his knowledge of Christianity is probably flawed and weak.
    5. Mr. Deedat does not seem to have any idea of how much love Mary Magdalene had for Jesus.
    6. Mr. Deedat takes great liberties with the Christian scriptures, twisting words, and stretching their meanings (such as angelized to spiritualized). This is a typical methodology used by cults. By picking a few verses out of their context, stretching the meaning of a word or two, one can justify almost anything with the "Holy Scriptures".
