Christian and Islamic Views of the Death, Resurrection, and Deity

of Jesus

Class Notes Week 6

Rebutal From the Islamic View

  1. It is the clear cut statement of Jesus to his disciples in the upper room that he was NOT resurrected as they thought because he had flesh and bones. This is a repeat of an argument made in the opening statement
  2. Through out the 27 books of the New Testament Jesus never said "I was dead and have come back from thje dead."
  3. Jesus was ever in disguise the 40 he was on earth following the crucifixion he never showed himself openly to the Jews.
  4. Jesus WAS reluctant to die and prepared for a show down with the Jews.
    • Jesus told His Disciples to buy swords - they told Him they had two. Jesus said "that is enough". [Note: a correct translation and interpretation is "That is enough!" - indicating that Jesus was annoyed with the talk of using swords. This sort of violence was counter to His teachings, out of character for Him. He could have called 10000 angels to protect Him, He did not need swords. Also note that when He was arrested, disciple cut off the ear of one of the troops of the arresting party. Jesus immediately put a stop to the action and healed the ear of one of the people arresting him. This action on Jesus' part is anything but a show down.]
    • Jesus sets up two lines of defense by leaving 8 disciples at the gate to Gethsemane, and an inner circle of defense farther in with three other disciples.
    • He prayed that God would "take this cup" from Him. He was willing to do God's bidding, but HIS choice was not to go the cross.
    • God sent an angel to save Jesus. All that happened after this was God planning Jesus' rescue.

  5. Crucifixion was to be a slow, lingering death, not just an execution.
  6. Unbroken [leg] bones can only help those who are alive. [Note: This is correct, it helps those being crucified stay alive a bit longer - see description of crucifixion in Christian opening arguments.]
  7. The Apostle Paul put all of religion on one point - the death and ressurection of Jesus - I Corinthians 15:14.
  8. Therefore Christians must some how prove Jesus was killed by crucifixion.
  9. The testimony, the prophecies, what Jesus said, His behaviour, all prove He was not crucified.

Rebutal From the Christian View

  1. Jesus did say in one of the 27 Books of the New Testament, Revelation 1:18, "I am the living one. I was dead, and behold, I am alive forevermore."
  2. Jesus did appeared to the Jews, including the Jew who was one of the greatest antagonist to Christianity - Saul of Tarsus, who became the Apostle Paul.
  3. One strong piece of evidence that Jesus lives is the changed lives of those who trust in His death and resurrection for the forgiveness of their sin.

Closing Statement for the Islamic View

  1. Man is a coward by nature, always passing the buck to someone else for his problems.
  2. When Jesus said take up your own cross he meant to carry your own responsibility. This is the Islamic system.
  3. Jesus taight us that our righteousness must exceed that of the Jews. [He said Pharisees - note the extrapolation to all Jews by Mr. Deedat.]
  4. Therefore, we must fast, pray, and give charity as the Jews do but on a higher level to gain heaven.
  5. Christians are being "taken for a ride" on a cross

Closing Statement for the Christian View

  1. Christians have been crucified in Jesus Christ.
  2. God paid the penalty that He sentenced us to Himself with Jesus' crucifixion.
  3. God is just and He has our sentence at death, but He loves us so much that He paid the sentence for us.
  4. Jesus says "I stand at the door and knock. And if anyone hears my voice, and opens the door, I will come in."
  5. Christians are being taken for a ride on the cross - straight to heaven.
