"ARGENTINA - Further south, in
Argentina, there have been rumours
for some time that an alien craft
crashed in the north-west part of the
country. It is thought that the
object, a metallic disc some 200
meters in diameter, was struck by
air-to-air missiles, knocking it out
of the sky."
"The area was surrounded by the
military, supported by helicopters,
and sealed off for days. There were
reports from locals of a large
triangular object, and dozens of
nylon body bags being removed from
the site. It is also thought that a
large number of bodies were flown to
the USA for examination".

REPORT distributed by the Argentinian ufo group "FAO" - Fundacion Argentina
de Ovnilogia (or Argentinian Ufology Foundation).
EXPLANATION GIVEN BY "FAO" ON THE CRASH OF A UFO IN THE PROVINCE OF SALTA,
ARGENTINA - extracted from the last FAO's bulletin, "OVNICIENCIA
ELECTRONICO" (or "Electronic UFOScience"), # 6, October 1996. This is a
short version, with the most important parts. It was forwarded via e-mail
by Luis Pacheco, from Argentina. The original source is Carlos Iurchuk. If
you want to see the complete version, take a look at the FAO's official
site (in spanish). Credits to Carlos Iurchuk and FAO. Translation from
spanish by P.H.Andrade.
This institution has sent to many investigators the explanation referring
to the events that took place on August 17th, 1995, in the Province of
Salta, Argentinian Republic.
Several information have made echo of versions that talked of the UFO crash
and the later retrieval of almost 200 alien bodies, that have been taken to
different places in the country.
Although the fact involving the UFO crash HAS BEEN CONFIRMED, there were NO
evidences in any moment of a retrieval operation headed by any military
organism or security force of our country.
Here it is a synthesis of the facts, extracted from the FAO's Bulletin
"OVNICIENCIA ELECTRONICO", # 6, October 1996 :
EXPLANATION
The episode we're talking about, that is being added to the "UFO-Crashed"
Data Bank of the FAO (Fundaccion Argentina de Ovnilogia) under the number
68 in the period 1954-1995, is this very way described by our institution
in the purpose of explanation, once there has been distributed through
several countries a wrong information about the retrieval of fragments and
occupants [of the ship], citing the FAO as one of its sources.
A PREVIOUS SIGN ?
The night of August 16th 1995, over the Cerro Colorado area, Mrs. Paz
Zamana, who lives nearby together with her husband, has observed the
evolutions of an orange light over their property. The witness observed the
crash of the flying object the next day...
crash of the flying object the next day...
[column of smoke]
THE FACTS
It was 01,45 P.M. of August 17th, when hundreds
of locals, perhaps thousands, placed in a
radius of about 300 km (or 186 miles),
witnessed the free fall of a flying craft,
followed by two strong explosions and an
earthquake in the area , especially in Joaquin
V. Gonzalez. From different places, people have
distinguished a column of smoke and land (see
picture), consequence of the impact of the UFO
on the terrain.
THE TESTIMONIES
Maybe, the most significant corresponds to [the one of] Mrs. Rosario
Sepulveda, resident in the village of El Tunal, southwest of Joaquin V.
Gonzalez. She describes the object as "a silver, big, long tube-shaped,
that came crossing the sky, until it exploded and crashed..."
The same way, Mrs. Paz Zamana, from the side of Cerro Colorado, affirmed
that "when this thing returned the next day, it was prettier, once it
brightened and a ray fell in the sky and it soon exploded and crashed over
there, behind the hill".
THE INVESTIGATIONS
In the official level, the happening was investigated by personnel from the
National University of Salta (UNSA - Universidad Nacional de Salta) and
very likely by the Salta's Atomic Center (Centro Atomico de Salta).
Furthermore, Civil Defense authorities, like the Rescue Group of the
Rosario de Lerma's region, have collaborated in the search efforts.
Respecting the private faith [of the witnesses], an innumerable amount of
curious people, local and national papers' reporters and small groups of
investigation, have asked residents and tracked a good quantity of square
kilometers with negative results. But the most suggestive resulted from a
group of non-identified persons, that speaking in English (would be
Americans) have covered all the area with vans, being accompanied in many
occasions by University staff and Atomic Centre personnel. As happened in
other opportunities, this individuals didn't miss the meeting...
THE EVIDENCES
PHOTOGRAPHIC - The snapshot of a resident shows the column of white smoke
produced by the UFO...
FOOTAGE - A video made in the slope of the Creston hill, at [Video scene]
3.370 mts. high, shows a furrow of burning vegetation (see
picture), result of some kind of fuel or igneous element that has spilled
over the soil, since it burned until the next day...
PHYSICAL - Besides the burning of stones and grass, the most disturbing
versions tell us about metallic fragments, of scanty thickness, very
similar to aluminum paper and solid... According to them, the remains
gathered by the enigmatic foreign comission would be the size of a car, and
what called one's attention about it was the concave shape that put [the
pieces] together, as well as the welding that joined it.
It is also deserving a mention an account given by the midshipman Pedro
Olivera, 31 years old, and chief of Rosario de Lerma's rescue corps, who
revealed that thru binoculars they could distinguish a metallic object,
which brightened under the Sun light... There is another testimony, from an
employee of the University [of Salta], who asked not to be identified. He
affirmed : "What is it ? [They] don't know. What I can assure you is that
it was something very sophisticated...".
THE CASE OF THE AVIATOR
[Antonio Galvagno, aviator] Antonio Galvagno (see picture) is a
young civil pilot, with six thousand
hours of flight, and is an expert in
fumigating [inseticide] who knows
very well the region, using in his
work a two-engine trustable plane,
according to his statements. Once
informed on the case, he has flied
over the region for many days,
managing to land in six different
places, with the purpose of gathering
information. Furthermore, he has
managed to distinguish the enigmatic
outline of the burnt hill, where the
UFO would have crashed. One morning,
flying at a thousand meters high, the
plane has fallen down without
support, as if the air flux, that
makes the plane to fly, had suddenly
disappeared...
"The plane's controls didn't respond and I fell down over the Cerro
Colorado [or "Colorado hill"], just right in the area where would be the
UFO. Fortunately, I left almost unscathed and the rescue group has found
soon the remains of my aircraft, but my accident don't have an
explanation...".
WHAT DIDN'T HAPPEN
There has NOT been an official retrieval of the craft or for less of its
occupants, as it has been divulged previously, but in a wrong way... .
There has NOT been a military intervention of any kind, in an official
manner, UNLESS THEY HAVE ACTED SECRETLY AND SECRETIVELY, avoiding hundreds
of locals that combed the area and that live in the region...
THE CONCLUSIONS
According to what has been informed by the University of Salta and the
Atomic Centre, the crash was produced by a "meteorite", one of the many
that have fallen in this part of the country.
Semiofficially, we can deduce that evaluating all the testimonies, the
incident was registered as being the mysterious fall of a metallic flying
body, propelled and piloted or not (due to the accident). UFO ? American
satellite ? Experimental artifact ? Maybe we'll never know the answer, but
what we're sure of is that it wasn't any meterorite, although towards the
southeast it is located the argentinian area of most frequently reported
meteoric activity, right in the middle of the Chaco province, bordering the
Santiago del Estero region.
Probably, the words of the aviator Galvagno are determinant : "I know where
the UFO is". It's a native forest of difficult access, where we can only
arrive in helicopters, fact that up to the moment didn't facilitate us ...
