On the morning of May 26, 1997 (Memorial Day), at approximately 11:40 AM, Art and his wife Ramona left their house together to close a fence that was left open. Since the Pahrump Valley has wide open skies and is located near the Nellis military facility it is not unusual to see a lot of high altitude jet activity there. Art looked up and saw a double wide contrail. Whatever was leading this white streak was moving very fast, from the East Southeast to the West Northwest and a bit North of the Pahrump Valley. As he stood looking he thought it could be a launch of some military vehicle because it was gaining altitude exceptionally fast. He said to his wife "..let's get the binoculars". With the aid of his state of the art optics he was able to determine that it was some sort of small military aircraft but, due to its very great height, was not able to resolve what type.

Ramona then took a look through the binoculars and noticed something falling near the path of the aircraft. She handed the binoculars back to Art who observed it to be a "cylindrical round object" that glowed "like a hundred watt bulb". The strange, bright, silverish thing, larger than the jet, was pacing it and then "stopped dead cold". It remained stationary (except for some possible pendulum-like motion) for some time. Finally, after several minutes, it left its sitting position and, "like a bat out of hell", started going South and gaining altitude. They lost sight of the UFO more from its vertical ascent than from any horizontal movement.

Art sought to get clarification or radar confirmation of the event by calling local airfields, but came up empty. In order to reach other possible witnesses, Art and his wife agreed to share their experience on his radio program. That evening, they told their story to Art's listeners and then opened a phone line for other witnesses to reach him on.
