Pre-refurbished Doggie and Debbie
The Doggie Speaks

(SAN FRANCISCO) - The Sloat Blvd. Doggie Diner Head, damaged during a recent tumble from its rusty perch, was refurbished and set back atop a new pole this weekend (Saturday, June 30). We are reminded of Debbie's 1999 interview. On the 10th anniversary of the Loma Prieta earthquake, she went to the Carousel Diner, across from the San Francisco Zoo, to chat with the oracle of Ocean Beach, the Doggie Diner Head. He'd taken the day off for a stroll in Alamo Square, so Debbie grabbed a cab and bagged this exclusive interview, featured here because we can't fit it in among all the commercials. Thank you.

Debbie: What was the biggest menu item that day in 1989?

Doggie: Lots of chili, and chili dogs. With lots of onions. Made me glad I was 25 feet up on that pole.

Debbie: Why are you in Alamo Square today?

Doggie: As much as I adore the calls of wildlife from across the way, it's good to take a day, and a walk, to clear one's mind of all the urban clutter. To focus. Plus, I just picked up a copy of Susan Faludi's book, "Stiffed: The Betrayal of the American Male." A day in the park, reading fine, controversial literature... who could ask for more? Besides, perhaps, dinner with some fair maiden?

Debbie: Stop it. Where's the rest of you?

Doggie: I suppose you missed the story about the great FiberGlas shortage of 1965. George Barris was customizing lots of cars for TV. Add in all the repairs to Corvettes and, well, there simply wasn't enough FiberGlas to go around. I may not be what I once was, but my sacrifice made possible the first Batmobile, a modified 1955 Lincoln Futura experimental vehicle.
Se la vie.
