ANGELS, MIRACLES AND THE OSCAR
A few years ago, Conyers, Georgia locals laid claim to a local miracle, a field where the Virgin Mary appeared. Want to talk miracles in a Georgia field? Follow me on this.
It's just possible I have something to do with the odd goings-on in Conyers.
Many moons ago, I was a summertime surveyors' assistant, preparing tree-carpeted Conyers to be stripped of its lush forests for the horde of SUV-driving urban expatriates who wanted new subdivisions within half-a-tank driving range. Denuding the landscape is tough work in the Georgia summer sun, staggering around in humidity that can only be compared to taking an Army-surplus itchy-scratchy blanket, soaking it in warm water, and wrapping it tightly around your head. I spent much of that summer in a heat-induced delirium. Forgetting to bring enough beverages wasn't a good idea, either.
But the good news is I'm pretty sure I met Holly Hunter.
Surveying one roadside, our sweaty crew was hacking through enough kudzu (an evil, fast-growing vine that, overnight, could bury New York City, and that's not such a bad idea). The lady who lived across the way kindly invited us to have a glass of iced tea. Her charming teen-aged daughter poured us tall, sweet and tasty teas and we chatted for about a half hour before I was dragged back to work. She became a fond summer memory, and I thought of her occasionally as years went by. Then came the movies Broadcast News and Raising Arizona.
Was that her? Nah. How could it be? Then I heard an interview with Holly and she talked about living in Conyers, and Boom! It was Holly! But does she remember me, a dusty, sweaty punk kid who drank glass after glass of tea and chatted the afternoon away? Does she at least write? No, I never heard from her again after that serendipitous day. And you see where her career has gone.
So what does that have to do with the miracle in the field? I forget now, but you want a miracle? Holly could give me a call. Thank you. |
