HANS GEORG MERCKLY

HANS GEORG MERCKLY , known in the Colonial records as George Markle, was born near Basel, Switzerland, February 1730. and died in Pennsylvania in August, 1799. He arrived in Pennsylvania on the ship " Christian " and was "qualified" at Philadelphia, September 13, 1749. He was unmarried when he came. After his marriage he established himself near Strasburg, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. The records of Pennsylvania show that in 1752 he became the owner of one hundred acres of land. His name occurs in 1790 in the census of Strasburg Township. He gave his services during the American Revolution as a private in the Strasburg Militia. He was a Member of Captain William Smyth's Company, on whose roster his name appears in 1777, 1780 and 1783. In the same company was also his son, John. |
