Bearded Iris, A-I

From Ken Walker's Garden

When most people think of growing iris in the garden, they think of tall bearded iris. A great deal of hybridisation and selection has been done with this group of iris. Breeders have increased the color range, number of blooms per stalk, and the fanciness of the blossoms. In the case of the later characteristic, I think that occationally tasteful restraint might result in more artistically beautiful blossoms. Oh well, gaudiness is still pretty.

I like this iris's nice dark rich color.

The color in this picture needs tweeking a little. In the future, I'll have to expand my picture editing skills to include color correction. At the moment, I crop and occationally adjust brightness and contract.

I think this is one of the nicest tall bearded iris that I grow. It has good rich colors. The standards in this picture are little washed out by the sun, but still look bright. The form of the blossoms is "modern" but is not overdone.

This is a "space age" or "novelty" iris. The tips of the beards lift off the petals forming "horns".

This is an example of a more extreme modern form of bloom. Tall bearded iris should be less frivolous and more regal, in my opinion.

Iris florentina
Iris florentina or Iris germanica 'Florintina'

This plant is the original source of orris root used in the perfume industry.
The weak floppy petals, which lack "substance", are typical of older variety of bearded iris. Never-the-less, the basic form of the flower is quite elegant.

This is the old "German Iris" that has been in cultivation for a long time. It is probably an ancent hybrid rather than true species.
