Les,

I see you made it to Barstow. Good. We will be at Kitt Peak tomorrow. If we don't make contact on simplex, try 146.76 PL 162.2 when you get east of Tucson. Good Traveling.

Jim

Jim, WB6ZII, and Marsha, KD6TTS, were waiting for us at the Benson AZ KOA. Jim "saw" me on APRS on the web, http://map.findu.com/w6tee*. I sent APRS (2 meter GPS position reports) on major travel days during the entire trip. The simplex frequency used for this trip was 147.555. An exception came several days later.

Just a quick note to let Jim and Marsha know that we are on our way and on schedule. Ed, KE6AFB, Sunny, KE6AFA, and I didn't get out of Sacramento until after 1030 yesterday, but made it to the Barstow KOA last night. We had a great dinner at Peggy Sue's 50s Diner across the freeway. The phone wasn't available last night for sending this, but I have hopes of getting this off now. ETA Benson AZ is 6 PM, to pick a time out of the air.

I operated HF mobile and checked in to the Sam's Radio Hams 40 meter net on 7.2685 this Sunday morning while leaving Barstow, and occasionally on the daily net on 7.273 before arriving at Lone Pine.

We are at Pahrump for two nights (Sunday and Monday). Tuesday we plan on going to Tuttle Creek in Lone Pine. I think we will check out the new Sag sites to see if we can get back to Lone Pine from them. I just could not make the MFJ tnc work on the boat should have taken my Kam. See you on Friday at Lone Pine.

From Frank, W6GZI, and Jan, KD6HYE. The "SAG" stops on the Whitney Classic are rest stops. Frank couldn't get WinLink (HF e-mail) to work with his MFJ controller at Lake Powell, but this message was sent by WinLink using his KAM controller.

Greetings from the KOA at Benson AZ. We were talked in by Jim, WB6ZII, about 1930 last night. The good news is that we didn't lose an hour due to AZ being on MST, but it got dark earlier, just the same. Marsha served us a fine spaghetti dinner after we got our trailers set up. We furnished pies, from Basha's in Parker. We will be here until Wed. AM. Today's destination is the Chiricahua Nat. Mon.

I also heard from Frank, W6GZI, who is in charge of the communications at Lone Pine this weekend. I talked to him on the air yesterday morning and they were at Hurricane UT, having left Lake Powell. But in his WinLink message last night, they were at Pahrump for two days before going on to Lone Pine.

We used the 146.76 repeater suggested by Jim in an earlier message for talk in. I don't know where it is, but it wasn't that useful, and then only well past Tucson. We used simplex when we got close enough.

Today (Mon) was spent seeing the Chiricahua National Monument and hiking through it. Tomorrow morning we have reservations for the 10 AM tour at Kartchner Caverns. No photography is allowed, so we hope there are digital photos for sale.

I didn't emphasize that I had APRS going all the way from Sacramento to Benson, where we are now. Jim just verified that my last track Sunday night at http://map.findu.com/w6tee* is just short of the KOA here. No more APRS until maybe Wednesday.

Today we finally got to tour Kartchner Caverns. It is definitely worth seeing, especially if you have seen other, less "alive" caves. No cameras, water bottles, packs, or anything that might hit the rocks. We went through multiple refrigerator case-type doors to keep the high humidity in. We had a picnic lunch on the grounds afterwards.

We spent the rest of the day in Tombstone and Bisbee.

We all had dinner at Ruiz's Mexican Restaurant (in Benson) where the young third generation waiter explained why his family put out a better meal than the restaurant next door. No complaint!

Tomorrow the five of us hit the road again maybe to Flagstaff. We could push on to Page, but Flagstaff is nice and is cool.

Nothing great to report tonight. We are all at the Flagstaff KOA and will head for Page and the Glen Canyon Dam tomorrow, perhaps staying over in St. George. Still sending APRS.

Greetings from Lone Pine. We left St. George UT this morning (Fri). Ed and Sunny continued on I-15 at Las Vegas toward home, while Jim, Marsha, and I turned north on 95 to cut across Death Valley to Lone Pine. So that is the end of the Fall Trip, and the start of the Whitney Classic public service.

Jim and Marsha left their motorhome in Beatty NV, then followed me across Death Valley to Lone Pine, several minutes behind in the Grand Cherokee. Bill, WA6IVI, from our group, was already here with his motorhome. The Sam's Radio Hams were laying out assignments for tomorrow afternoon's (Saturday) overnight ride.

Jim and Marsha were assigned the start at Badwater and Furnace Creek. I have the so-called Wild Rose rest stop at Emigrant Station. Bill has Towne Pass. We all enjoyed dinner at the Totem Restaurant, after which, Jim and Marsha headed back to Beatty. Bill and I are camped in the lot next to the Alabama Hills Inn with the other Sam's. I won't have more to report until after the bike ride is over Sunday afternoon.

Jim and I switched from 147.555 to 147.51, the Sam's Radio Hams simplex frequency, when we left Beatty. This was used for the Whitney Classic and the following Campout. I used my TM-D700 as a cross-band vehicle repeater during the ride to let me use an HT around my assigned location. The second frequency I used for that was 444.00 simplex.

No, not that Boulder Creek, the RV camp at Lone Pine. This is a three-day campout of the Sam's Radio Hams following the Whitney Classic bike ride. I haven't said much about it since it involves Hams most of you don't know. Most are from Southern California. We have four members of this mailing list that are SRH members, all of which worked on the Whitney Classic. But I am the only one that stayed for the Campout. There are three other Northern California SRH members, but none are on this mailing list nor at the Campout.

One Orange County member who spends a month in the Portola area every Summer has suggested a Campout there for us NorCal members next year.

I do want to mention some numbers that would give our home-grown campouts something to shoot for. There are 16 RVs and 29 people, a small turnout for this group. Only three of the spouses are not Hams, but I think we hold our own there. This is one of 11 Campouts during the year, which also function as the meetings. There are also daily informal 40 meter and 75 meter nets, but two meter simplex is used for the Campouts.

Yesterday some of us hiked to an arch in the Alabama Hills. Today there is going to be a drive (mobile run?), destination to be announced at the meeting in a few minutes.

Tomorrow is going home day, but with the change of weather, we have snow on the Sierras and the New York Mountains (Cerro Gordo, etc.). I may come home through Mojave and Bakersfield rather than 395 with the trailer.

I had my FT-817 all-band/mode QRP rig, but did not find time to use it like I intended. I hurriedly got on the Sam's 75 meter net one night at Lone Pine with it, but my signal at a distance was very weak.

Subject: [Mobileer] Fall Trip Summary

Here are some loose ends about the three events that just ended.

Fall Trip - We didn't have a Fall Trip last year, but in 2000 the Fall Trip (Durango CO) followed the Lone Pine activities, rather than preceded them as happened this year. There were valid reasons for doing it that way this year, but I felt it was more satisfying having our trip at the end in 2000. Since I was the only one that went from Lone Pine to the 2000 Fall Trip, it may be hard to compare. We had the same Fall Trip participants then as this year, plus Marc, Ross (sk), and Helen.

Whitney Classic - This is a 135 mile long activity, entirely on 2 meter simplex. There were some amazing distances consistently covered by some stations, even over mountains. In every case of a high performance station, a high gain omni antenna was used. One of the communications organizers said that he didn't believe there was that much difference in 2 meter antennas, but he believes now after hearing some of these stations from a distance. I would add that this applies to poor locations attempting to reach repeaters on other activities too.

Boulder Creek (Lone Pine) Campout - The theme of the campout was Octoberfest. Harry Hinz, KE6RJ, knocked himself out to put on a fine German dinner and entertainment the last night and he and his co-hosts deserve to be proud. We ran into Harry and Nancy, KE6QI, at the Seaside ARRL Convention early in June, and Harry was running over with enthusiasm for the Octoberfest then. Harry and I have been good friends since we met at Quartzsite a few years ago and he told me he liked my Worldradio column. That will do it!

More loose ends:

APRS - I sent my position by APRS on travel days during the trip. My TM-D700 is set to beep when it receives its own report back from a digipeater. Beeps are a good bet that my position made it to the internet. When Ed, Sunny, and I reached Barstow the first day, I put out an e-mail to assure Jim and Marsha that we had got that far. But Jim had already sent me an e-mail saying that he saw us arrive in Barstow on the internet (http://map.findu.com/w6tee*, or any call). Beep-free areas included the desert past Barstow. Phoenix and Tucson were good, all the way to the Benson KOA. It was good to Flagstaff, but disappeared from there through Page and Kanab until St. George. It disappeared again until Las Vegas, then disappeared again though Lone Pine until almost home.

While at Lone Pine, I told John, N6SEX, that I was driving up to Horseshoe Meadows road, a high switchback cliffhanger SW of Lone Pine, to try to reach the Blue Ridge 1.2 repeater. I knew that APRS worked from up there, so I told John to watch for my location on the web. We didn't make contact, but when I got home, I had an e-mail from an Exeter Ham that saw my position and congratulated me on getting a signal out of the dry area along Hwy 395! He didn't notice that I was west of 395 at 9000 feet!

E-mail - I used my PocketMail with a built-in acoustic coupler, which works with a toll-free number on any payphone. All the campgrounds where we stayed had modem jacks, and Jim and Ed frequently were found huddled over their laptops. Boulder Creek, at Lone Pine, has a WebTV, which can either be used free for browser mail, or unplugged to use the modem jack. I had a Hotmail account activated on this mailing list to use on the WebTV while there, but WebTV is so slow, it was far more convenient to use PocketMail.
