My HF Mobile column is in Worldradio in even months.

HF Mobile Radio: Before repeaters, HF mobile radio gave hams local coverage plus the possibility of skywave contacts. HF mobile first became popular in the 40s on 10 meters. In the 50s, changes in FCC rules and lack of sunspots made 75 meters popular for mobile
   HF mobile activity was reduced by repeaters and small cars. I "helped" by co-authoring an explanation of FM repeaters in Oct. 1969 QST and the 1970 ARRL Handbook. Mobileers replaced big noisy HF rigs with squelched FM rigs. Repeaters now fill the niche held by groundwave HF operating.
   New smaller HF rigs are allowing a return to HF mobile operating. I use an IC-725 mobile. Newer rigs are smaller yet. Now we have mostly skywave QSOs and few local contacts.

My 1963 mobile rigs, Gonset G66 receiver, modified for SSB AGC, Heath 80-10 SSB mobile transmitter, Heath Pawnee 2 meter AM VFO transceiver, in my 1962 Chevrolet Impala.
