Subject: [Mobileer] Quartzsite trip Day 1

Got a late start yesterday so only made 600 miles with the trailer. Spent the night with Vern & Trish, W3DLY & WA3GKT, in Lake Havasu City. For those that don't know them, they were active members of the RAMS mobile club in Sacramento in the 1960s, and have been on a couple of our Mt Vaca desert trips.

The trip down was punctuated with frequent contacts with Bob and John on the state-wide 1.2 GHz network, and with John & others on IRLP. The IRLP contacts were via the K6IXA and K6JSI 440 repeaters. The Frazer JSI repeater was good from Fresno to Barstow, but the new JSI Santa Rosa Pk repeater did not live up to expectations on I-40 so I didn't get on. Might try it today, though.

With all the other demands, I didn't transmit any APRS, but will soon.

It's just a relatively short drive to Quartzsite from here so will get settled in today at MP99, the Ham Quartzfest site. Vern & Trish will be down on Tuesday with their local RV club at MP112.

We have a new member that I admitted to the mailing list just as I was leaving yesterday. Perhaps he will introduce himself. I was talking to Vern last night about everyone doing a brief biog relative to their Ham travel and/or camping interests. Vern is a member and agreed.

Bob and John referred to above are W6CYX and N6SEX. Frazier is Mt. Frazier near Gorman CA on I-5. Santa Rosa Pk. is near Palm Springs. That should be MP115, not MP112, but turned out they were then 2 miles east on a second road. Quartzsite AZ is 18 miles from the California state line, 20 miles from Blythe CA, on I-10.

I've got my trailer all set up here at the Quartzfest next to a Ham that is to give a talk on DirectPC on Wednesday. I'll keep my ears open for any portable IRLP implications.

Vern, Exit 19 is alive and well! 100X better than 17 which is a mess.

IRLP/JSI - The Santa Rosa Pk machine was spotty all the way, except I did talk briefly to Shorty from I-10 E of Ehrenberg. It occasionally makes squelch noise over here.

1.2 - Hayden Pk (Kingman) is alive but appears to be isolated due to Rodman being down. Pass that on to So Cal. Bob, sorry I left you off the previous message.

AZ misc - Went to the store in Lake Havasu City this morning with Vern & Trish and I wanted ice. Vern pointed out a Water & Ice store down a couple of doors. Bottled and flavored waters and gourmet ice! The guy said this is the third in the chain, but there are 150 water stores in Phoenix, much smaller than their's!

This doesn't have any replies to any messages sent me because I have to compose this before going to the phone. There isn't much Ham-wise until Monday, so I may skip a couple of days.

The Ham Quartzfest is held 6 miles south of town near milepost 99 on U.S. 95. Exit 19 on I-10 in Quartzsite had been closed due to construction, but was wide open and greatly improved. Shorty is K6JSI in San Diego. Rodman is Mt. Rodman, south of I-40, east of Barstow CA.

Sunday night. I hesitate to send this because as of Noon today, my day 2 message Friday night had not come back. I know it went because I got an admin message back about one of the CCs, not on the mailing list.

We had a nice demo working Ham satellites with a 2 band HT in one hand and a 2 band yagi in his other hand.

I went to town and shopped the biggest "show". Lots and lots yet to see including the RV show that just opened. Hams still rolling in here.

1.2 to back home would be easy if Rodman were up because Hayden (Kingman) is S9 all over.

No. We also didn't get the message that said, "Sunday night. I hesitate to send this because as of Noon today, my day 2 message Friday night had not come back..."

Try to do better next time! :-)

All kidding aside, I did receive the day 2 message, although I could not prove it at this point since it has been deleted.

Thanks for all your comments. I'll resend it when I figure out why "forward" is not on the outbasket menu.

Did 1.2Bob change his e-mail address? His copies bounced hard, but only after undeliverable for 2 days. Maybe Mr Austin (we have 2 John A. on the list) could bring him up to date on my 1.2 comments which were for Bob's benefit.

Ron Brown, WA6WIY, from Jackson area, who many have known a long time, is here and subscribed to our list. I'll wait until I get home because he won't be home to the e-mail address he wants for another month. He uses Winlink HF Pactor e-mail on the road.

Newest versions of Airmail, HF Pactor e-mail software for WinLink, were explained Monday morning by Tom, KD7ALH, and Cap, WB6ZDT. 1.2Bob is W6CYX, again. Mr. Austin is John, N6SEX, again. Monday night, I drove to the BLM camp area east of town and called Ed, KI6MX, on 146.52. He drove out and guided me in to their camp in the dark. He and three other Hams were there with the No. Calif. unit of the Wally Byam Airstreamers, and are from Orland, Redding, etc.

I keep forgetting to say that I have been sending APRS off and on since Saturday. Go to map.findu.com/w6tee* .

I'm standing in the pay phone line so I don't know what needs answering yet.

Frank:

I've been here at MP 99 since Friday ... Tell Larry that bridge to Dome Rock from town is closed due to land dispute. The west end he was talking about is the only way you can get an RV in. The new Exit 19 at east end of town is wonderful. Exit 17 by Main Event is a mess.

I think I will stay put here. Harry & Nancy ... are here too. Saw Dick and Lucy at the Sam's tent, of course, and had a nice chat. They are trying to get SRH on the Baker to Vegas race in April.

Let me know if you get this.

This message was not sent to the Mobileer mailing list because Frank is not on that. Frank & Jan are W6GZI & KD6HYE. All of the Hams mentioned here belong to Sam's Radio Hams. Larry, WB6F, did not come. Harry & Nancy are KE6RJ & KE6QI. Dick, KE6PSC, and Lucy, KC6PSB, were working in the Good Sam tent at the RV Show.

Yes we got it! We should be there sometime Thursday We will be at MM99 I think. Hope the WX is better in Quartzsite. see you soon. Frank

Frank specified he was coming to our milemarker 99 because there was a small group of Sam's Radio Hams going to Rice Ranch in town on Thursday.

I should acknowledge messages received from W3DLY, W6MAR, W6QAC, K6DGW, W6LLP, & WB6PHQ on this trip. I never got any reply about 1.2Bob.

Yesterday was a bad wind day so didn't do much stomping around the shows. But I did visit with Vern and Trish who are out with their local non-ham club north of town. The first person I saw at their camp remembered me from Goffs a couple of years ago. My arrival was just in time for their pot luck.

Frank & Jan from Yucca Valley should be in today. Our biscuits and gravy feed was moved from this morning to tomorrow because they didn't know how long the wind would last. We go to the town of Brenda tomorrow night for fish dinner. Been there before and it is good. They closed reservations at 60. I've lost track of which Ham talks I've reported on if any, but there is to be one on boondocking tonight.

I'm sitting in my Blazer in town finishing lunch and this message and about to get out to send this at a pay phone. Just talked to a couple of Sam's Radio Hams who just got to town while I was sitting here.

Oh yes, N6SEX's "adopted" mother, Lucy, says hello.

I missed the Wednesday morning PSK31 demo because I had a trailer tire that I had to take to Blythe CA to be replaced. 'Mother' is an inside joke from the 2000 Whitney Classic Public Service that Dick and Lucy (above) organize for Good Sam.

I'm sitting at the table where we had a great fish buffet, in the only restaurant in Brenda AZ.

Frank & Jan showed up yesterday and are camped next to me. We went 4-wheeling today west of camp with KW5I and his wife from Tulsa. I've met them here before.

Tomorrow is the swap meet where some of my HF antennas and Vicki's current mobile rig came from in previous years. It is held right out from my trailer. Too late to get your wish lists in.

The biscuits and gravy, moved from Thursday, were good. A good idea for campouts. VE testing was held Friday morning by Bob, K9WMP, and Laura, K9BZY, as usual. Six candidates, six passed. The restaurant in Brenda is the Blackrock,

Les,
We didn't make it down to 99 yesterday. I had back problems most of the time at Quartzsite and by Friday was unable to walk from the RV to our fire area, so I knew it would have been impossible to get around the swap meet area. We came home Saturday morning and I am still not any better. Really don't know what set it off, I had not lifted anything heavy or done anything unusual. Just one of those things. Maybe next year.......

Sorry about your back, but I think it was due to anticipation of all the heavy things you were going to buy at the Ham swap. I noticed your absence and wondered. Thanks for the update.

Saturday was the last day of the Ham Quartzfest at milepost 99. The Ham "yard sale" was good for me since I added a full length Outbacker with 160 meters in very new condition to my HF mobile antenna collection for a reasonable price. The group picked the same week next year since it matches the big RV show dates. There were 75 Ham RVs and about 145 participants this year. A lot more came just for the Ham swap. Some said they were there because of the mention in my Worldradio column.

I am spending the night in Barstow and will be on 1.2, IRLP, and APRS when I hit the road in the morning (Monday). But not 160 meters, yet.

No one ever answered my question why Bob Warmke's e-mail was bouncing a week ago, so I'm trying the only address I have for him again.

Nothing like a night at the Barstow Motel 6 to unwind from a week of dry camping!

Subject: [Mobileer] End of trip

I made it home a little after 3 PM, with several 1.2 GHz conversations with Bob, W6CYX, stretching from Hinkley to Modesto. The trip totaled 12 days, 10 of those at Quartzsite, at least in part. The only thing I didn't mention in previous messages was getting a 1.2 gain antenna to go on my old cellular NMO mount in lieu of a short piece of wire. This was used on the way home.

If any of you are interested in the latest updates on Airmail (Winlink) HF e-mail, see me. It gets better every year at the Quartzfest talks. I also have info on DirecWav, the updated 2-way version of Hughes' DirecPC satellite internet.

I had 82 e-mails waiting, but the only one I have read and acted on was from the Mobileer mailing list saying there was one new subscriber candidate, and two existing subscribers with messages being held because they answered using an address different than the one on record. (I knew who they were, but the computer didn't.) All have now been acted on favorably. If you subscribed with a forwarding address, like arrl.net, and do not have that programmed into your return address, see me about changing your subscription.

Do not send any more messages to my PocketMail address until the next time.

Les, W6TEE

The new 1.2 GHz antenna replaced the short piece of wire only for that mount. The antenna used on the way to Quartzsite was a Diamond on loan from John, N6SEX, NOT the short piece of wire. I used John's TM-541 for 1.2, not my IC-T81.

Now that this is all together, I see one more missing subject. Central to the Quartzfest is the interest in HF operation. There wasn't a day that went by when someone wasn't talking about having just been on the RV Service Net, Western Public Service System, Sam's Radio Hams, or some other HF net from their RV. When you are full time, or extended time RVers, as most of these Hams are, you can't depend on repeaters or even public communications everywhere you might be. But good Hams are rounded, and everyone also had 2 meter FM for around camp or around town.

All e-mail addresses above are omitted.
