The
route begins at Rio Road and Hwy. 1 in Carmel.
Go east on Rio Road to Carmel Rancho Blvd. (1/2
mile).
Turn left on Carmel Rancho and go north to the
second stoplight, which is Carmel Valley Road (3/4 mile).
Go east (right) on Carmel Valley Road for
approximately 23-24 miles until you come to Tassajara Road.
Mid Valley is at the 6 mile mark, and Carmel Valley Village is at the 12 mile mark. There are several shops for food and beverage in the Village.
Continue on past the
Village for approximately 11-12 miles to Tassajara Road, the last 2 miles is a
gradual climb and the last mile a bit tougher climb. Once you have
reached this point, you can turn around and head back or you can continue on
Carmel Valley Road approximately 25 miles further as it continues to
Greenfield, at Hwy. 101. The road from that point is hilly (up-down and
windy). It makes a great century on a longer day (for those who are
really
tough!).
Approximate mileage would be 50 miles from the Baker's Square parking lot. The best place to park would be behind Baker's Square and Bank of America or in the large parking lot in front of Safeway and Long's Drugs.
A great side trip would be to take Cachagua Road after Carmel Valley Village, (approx. 3 1/2 miles). This is a real climber, steady uphill (steep) for 2 miles and then hilly through the hills and vineyards for 6-8 miles (approx.). You need to be in good shape for this one. It will take you out to Tassajara Road, and then left back to Carmel Valley Road, and then you can go either left to Carmel or right to Greenfield.
While in Carmel, be sure to visit the Point Lobos State Reserve, bikes are permitted on the auto tour loop.
