This 3.5M multi-use path is continuous with some of San Francisco's most famous historical features and park sites along this shoreline. The Promenade starts a little past the Yacht Harbor and ends near the Fort Point Coast Guard Station. However, for greater mileage and a wonderful run, start at Aquatic Park and proceed to the Great Meadow in Fort Mason, then pick up the Par Course to the Marina Green. At Marina and Baker, you should be able to get a glimpse of the Palace of Fine Arts, a very worthwhile detour.
Returning to the water's edge, run along Crissy Field with great views of the bridge, the bay and the city skyline, or pick up the paved promenade. At the end, there is a trail leading to the Golden Gate Bridge. Running across the span is exhilarating, on a clear and sunny day, the bay is full of sailboats, the skyline is magnificent, and the hillsides are teeming with cyclists.
For additional miles and unparalleled scenery, explore the Marin Headlands and the Point Bonita Lighthouse. If you want a less challenging run, visit Sausalito after crossing the bridge. It is about 9M from Aquatic Park. The run is primarily downhill, and there are many places to stop and enjoy the ambiance of this exquisite city, right along the waterfront. If you have had enough running for the day, return by the ferry. Sausalito-Fisherman’s Wharf Ferry (415) 546-2896. $5.50 one-way.
Another option for a long run is to follow the Coastal Trail south from the Golden Gate Bridge. This scenic 9.2M excursion will take you through China Beach, Land's End, and the Cliff House, Lake Merced and Fort Funston.
