Hayward Shoreline Marsh

The Hayward Shoreline Trail is a 6.6M, flat, dirt path adjacent to the San Francisco Bay. Located in the East Bay, it is also close to those on the Peninsula, near the end of the San Mateo Bridge. This area offers several interesting landscapes that are influenced by the shifting tides; mud flats, salt marshes, grasslands and salt evaporation ponds that are no longer in use. The shoreline areas provide nesting and feeding grounds for over 90 species of birds and wildlife. As you progress along the trail, you will be able to see many kinds of shorebirds, herons, egrets, terns and sandpipers. There are some eerie contrasts along the way, sweeping views of the bay on one side, and a landfill on the other. However, the trail is very well maintained with no visible debris along the shore.

The Hayward Shoreline Interpretive Center has naturalists on staff and information about the restoration and enhancement of the wetlands area. Steven Berrios is very helpful and fun to talk to.

This is an easy trail, great for beginners or kids to ride along on mountain bikes.
