Lafayette Reservoir

Located off Highway 24, this recreation area is a good place to squeeze in a run during a lunch hour, or after work on your commute. Remember the roller coaster ride at Kiddieland? The Lakeside Trail looks deceptively flat when you start, just a small incline up ahead…but the then the course is dominated by rolling hills, some fairly steep. The trail is 2.7 miles, marked at ¼ intervals, and paved. Only parts of the pathway has views of the reservoir. The trail is very popular with walkers and families. You may see deer near the ranger's quarters or in the open space near the exit.

The Rim Trail is a 4.7-mile natural dirt path. There are several access points along the Lakeside Trail. The area has gorgeous views year round; in the fall, there are some deciduous trees changing colors. Although some hills can be quite steep, this is your best bet for a short workout in solitude with magnificent views of Mt. Diablo and the surrounding foothills.

Facilities: Restrooms are located at several points along the paved trail. A drinking fountain is near the boat dock. There is short-term meter parking (.50/half hour) or purchase a $4.50 daily use fee. Rangers will give parking tickets if the meter is expired. At peak times, short-term parking can fill rapidly. There is parking on Pine Road under the highway ramp just a few blocks from the Reservoir. Bikes and roller blades are permitted on Tuesdays and Thursdays-noon until closing, and Sunday-opening until 11am.
