Contra Loma Regional Park, Antioch

Don't let the drive through this hot, desolate rangeland discourage you. This little gem is truly an oasis within a desert. The lake has a swim lane approximately 60 yards long. The water is quite clean with no trace of slime. (When was the last time you could see your hands underwater in an open water swim?) Most of the visitors remain on the sandy swim beach, so you can practice your sighting and technique undisturbed. Swimming is open year round.

Notice: Call the park to see if swimming is still available, there have been rumors that the beach will be closed down until the water quality is improved.

Facilities: well maintained restrooms and changing rooms, also a refreshment stand. The entrance fee is $4.00, although you could park outside the gates and bike in. The surrounding area is so hot and uninspiring that biking or running is not that great.

Tips:

Wear shoes on the sand unless you want to get in some intervals on your way to the water.
Take your visor and sunglasses, there are no shady areas on the beach.
