This
7.75M multi-use trail parallels St. Mary's Road through Lafayette and Moraga.
The trail has three sections, the north
end of the trail starts at Olympic Boulevard and Pleasant Hill Road in
Lafayette, south of Highway 24. The first
section extends about 5M from the start to St. Mary's Road at Bollinger Canyon,
passing residential homes and prime
Moraga land. The views become more scenic as you get closer to St. Mary's
College at Bollinger Canyon.
The next mile includes a par course to Moraga
Commons, a Walnut Creek city park. On the walled sign for the park, there is a tribute to Matt Biondi, Moraga's Olympic
swimmer. The last section is a little over a mile and a half, extending through
downtown Moraga to the Valle Vista Staging Area on Canyon Road. The paved trail
is 60-feet wide, and has
a dirt singletrack alongside for most of its
length.
Twenty years ago, Rails-to-Trails Conservancy efforts converted this former unused railroad corridor, (the old Sacramento Northern line) to a linear park and community link. An economic study revealed that the trail generates over $2 million dollars into the local business activity by the half-million trail users per year.
The Layfayett-Moraga Trail
is perfect for an easy or family ride. After a hard ride in the Berkeley Hills, this path is a pleasant cool-down and
short-cut to Walnut Creek.
Facilities:
Drinking water at the trail's junction with Foye Drive and behind the firehouse at St. Mary's Road and Glenside Drive. Water and restrooms are available at Moraga Commons.
