Ride the Palomares-Niles Canyon Loop and the Calaveras Loop combined. 60 miles, two major hilly sections at miles 4 and 35 (the Calaveras Wall). Perfect early season March ride, when the auto traffic is light and the weather is cool. Very hot in the summer months. Enjoy the winding, open views along the Calaveras Reservoir.
Start:
Fremont Bart station
North
on Walnut Street
Left on
Mission Blvd. .97M
Right
on Niles Canyon road 1.9M
Left
on Palomares-start to climb! (1100 ft) 4.1M
Right on
Highway 580 Frontage Road 14.5M
Right
on Foothill Road which becomes Pleasanton-Sunol Road 19.7M
Halfway
point, good place to lunch is in
beautiful Sunol. There is a small store and cafe. 28.5M
Make sure to go East to Calaveras road. (Don't
go right on Niles Canyon!)
Follow Calaveras road (you will see a sign after
the overpass) to Milpitas. This is a 10M gorgeous climb, not too difficult, but remember to hydrate and fuel
well, or the last 10M is a real bear.
Right
on Milpitas Blvd./Warm Springs road 46.9M
Left on
Mission Blvd. 52.3M (Comment from Matt Gundersen: If you go right, you'll end up at 680
or the Ohlone college. It is a left at the second Mission, not first
Mission. Remember, Fremont/Milpitas have 2 Mission exits.)
Left on Walnut, and return to Fremont Bart. 59M
