SHASTA OF THE WOLVES -- Dodd, Mead, 1919. VG- (no dj). A classic variation on the boy raised by wolves theme most notable in Kipling's Mowgli stories. Book is clean and solid, with previous owner's name inside, and on rear blank endpaper, she wrote a few sentences describing her thoughts on the boy's later life with the wolves. BEACH, CHARLES AMORY:

The Air Service Boys series was a six-volume World War I aerial combat series, 1919-20, originally published by George Sully. Then World republished them (3 formats), then Goldsmith, then Saalfield.

AIR SERVICE BOYS OVER THE RHINE -- Saalfield (Sully) 1919. Number 4 in the series, VG-/VG-. Yet another different dj style, this one with a wrap-style, with cover art duplicated on back. Book is clean and solid, with usual page browning, but has had front free endpaper removed. Dj is bright and colorful, nice art, shows edge chipping and a closed tear, bottom front, and a small hole in the dj spine. $5.00

BEACH, EDWARD L. (CAPTAIN):

AROUND THE WORLD SUBMERGED -- A VG/VG ex-library copy of Beach's story of taking the nuclear submarine TRIDENT around the world submerged. Discard stamps, spine tag, front free endpaper removed. A nice copy. $7.50

BECKMANN, FRANK HARRISON:

DUST OF INDIA -- Stratford, 1937. Good+/Good+. Primarily a writer of business and motivational books, this is Beckmann's story of his journeys through India in the 1920s. Book is clean and solid, dj bright and colorful. Good+ is because boards were dampened at some point, rippling and staining the boards and discoloring the back of the dj. Many pages of B&W photos, an interesting travelogue. Inscribed and signed by the author. $20.00

BIDDLE, NICHOLAS (BRIGADIER GENERAL):

MILITARY MEMOIRS -- Livingston, 1972. VG/VG-. Signed and inscribed by the author, the story of the life of a man serving through two world wars; the conflicts and their aftermath. $20.00

BIFF BREWSTER: (by Andy Adams)

This was a 13-volume series written by Walter Gibson, Peter Harkins and Edward Pastore under the "Andy Adams" pseudonym. The Brazilian Gold Mine Mystery was published in 1960, and Mystery of the Alpine Pass (the final volume) in 1965. Volumes 1-10 first published with dust jackets, 1-3 and (later) 11-13 published in picture cover.

MYSTERY OF THE AMBUSH IN INDIA -- G&D, 1962. Number 7 is VG/Good+. Book is clean and solid, dj bright and colorful, with these issues -- some edge wearing/chipping, with a couple of tape repairs, and front flap is attached to inner boards. Some paper residue on front endpaper from removal of something (name plate?), but no damage to endpaper. A passable copy of a title uncommon in dj. $45.00

A very rare Norwegian picture cover printing of the first volume in the series. VG+ to near fine, with very minimal edge wear and slight page edge browning. A real rarity for Biff Brewster collectors. $50.00

BIFF BREWSTER OG MYSTERIET MED DEN KINESISKE RINGEN (MYSTERY OF THE CHINESE RING) -- Number 2 in the series, printed in Oslo (1961). Some rubbing to back cover and slight page browning, otherwise very nice, a solid VG. $50.00

Book is clean and solid, with discard stamps and card pocket scar on rear endpaper. Dj is vibrant and clean, with only one noteworthy flaw. On the spine, there is a library spine tag, and just above that, a 3/4-inch wide band where the dj was torn away. Other than that, almost no wear. A nice copy of a volume very hard to find in dj. $45.00

FIVE GO TO SMUGGLER'S TOP -- Hodder & Stoughton, 1971. VG/VG. A clean, bright and solid copy of this exciting Enid Blyton tale. $15.00

JOINING THE COLORS -- Penn, 1929. VG/Fair+. Scarce in a dj, this is the first volume in the four-volume "Victory" series. Book is clean and solid, dj bright and colorful. Dj does have extensive edge wear, large missing piece to front (impacts lower part of art), and top right front (misses title). Penn titles are rarely found in a dj. $25.00

RED RANDALL ON ACTIVE DUTY -- G&D, 1944. A VG/VG- copy of the second volume in the "Red Randall" series. Book has wartime printing notice, usual page browning, otherwise very clean and solid. DJ is clean and bright, does show some light chipping to spine base and top, also a bit of discoloring on spine edge. A nice copy. $20.00

DAVE DAWSON ON THE RUSSIAN FRONT -- Crown, 1943. VG/VG-. Book is clean and solid, with no cover, page or binding problems. Dj shows some edge wear (no stains or missing pieces), and purple of spine has lightened (title and author still clearly visible). A nice copy of #11. $30.00

Breckenridge and W.M. Allison wrote a 10-volume series of globe-trotting adventures, The Radio Boys, centered around a radio theme. All 10 were published between 1922 and 1931 by A.L. Burt.

SKYBLAZER -- Random House, 1946. A fascinating find, this is the story of the adventures of Barry Martin, experimental pilot for Starwing, on his goodwill trip to South America. VG+/VG+, with only slight wearing to spine base. A very attractive copy. $20.00

SKYFREIGHTER -- Random House, 1942 (first printing). The further adventures of Barry Martin, a bush pilot flying to the radium mines of far northern Canada. VG/VG, with slight dj edge wear and a small chip to the rear top fold. $30.00

BRIGHTON BOYS:

An 11-volume series written by Scott Francis Aaron, using the pseudonym James Driscoll, or Lieutenant Driscoll. Involves the adventures of a group of lads during World War I. The volumes, all written between 1918 and 1920, were published by the John C. Winston Company.

A scarce older boys' series title from an author perhaps better known for his cute animal stories for younger readers. $40.00

LITTLE LORD FAUNTLEROY -- A VG+ G&D pub., with wartime notice. VG+ dj. $10.00

BURRITT, EDWIN C.:

CAMERON ISLAND -- Revell, 1918. VG (no dj). Burritt wrote a short (two-volume) series which is almost impossible to find anywhere. The first volume was "Boy Scout Crusoes", dealing with the adventures of a group of Boy Scouts in the South Pacific. This is the sequel, "Further Adventures in the South Seas." Few collectors have ever seen either volume, and this copy is in VG, unfaded condition. Very slight cover edge wear, and the upper corners of a few pages are bent down, but no tears, stains, damaged or missing pages, no binding problems. Illustrated with glossy plates by famed artist Walt Louderback. This is a rare bit of juvenile series history. $100.00

GIBBS, ROBERT A.:

During the early 20's, Gibbs was the headmaster of the Page Military Academy in Los Angeles. He wrote and the Academy published a two-volume collection of stories for the boys of the Academy. "Stories told to the youthful cadets of Page Military Academy while in camp on Catalina Island.") Volume one is Western Tales (1925), Volume two is Sea Stories (1926). Both are now quite scarce, especially Sea Stories. Unknown at this time whether these were published with a dust jacket or not, but I suspect not.

WESTERN TALES (AS TOLD TO THE PAGE CADETS AT CATALINA) -- Volume One, VG (no dg). Slight edge wear to a copy that is loaded with dozens of western stories, as well as several dozen B&W plate illustrations and line drawings. A remarkable accomplishment by the school's headmaster. This copy is signed and inscribed by Gibbs to a William E. Sparling.

Gill was a remarkable character, who fought his own MS to a standstill long enough to venture into the jungles of Ecuador and return with 25 pounds of crude curare, which he believed might be a cure for his disease. Gill wrote many books on the jungles, including a series of juvenile adventures based on the Manga, a mythical tribe of the jungles, and the adventures of several young American boys. $50.00

JOE'S SIGNAL CODE -- Lee and Shepard, 1903. VG (no dj). Probably not a series title, but a tremendously rare bit of juvenile literature from an author about whom almost nothing is known. Some research indicates Hesser was possibly part of a family prominent in Pennsylvania history, with roots dating back to pre-Revolutionary War times, but that is uncertain. In any event, this title involves a group of young people stranded aboard a sinking ship. They're able to save the ship long enough to reach a deserted island, where they live by their wits for more than a year before rescue. Clean, bright and solid, with no page or binding problems. Slight cover edge wear, but cover art is very nice, silver lettering is clean and bright. A nice find for the juvenile literature collector. $100.00

Houston wrote a very scarce three-volume series detailing the exploits of a group of boys at the North Pole. Published by John C. Winston in 1907, titles are The Search for the North Pole, The Discovery of the North Pole and Cast Away at the North Pole. All three published with gilt-decorated covers, without dust jackets.

MY HAREM LIFE -- Sampson Low, Marston & Co. VG-/Fair+. Admittedly a bit unusual for these pages, this is such a classic bit of history I couldn't pass it up. Subtitled "An Intimate Autobiography of the Sultan's Favourite," this is the story of a young girl of noble birth who is kidnapped into the harem of the Sultan. Book is clean and solid, with ageing pages typical of Sampson Low volumes, and the front and rear hinges show (binding solid). Dj is bright and unfaded, shows extensive edge wear and tearing, especially a piece missing from the spine top, impacting the title, and also taking out part of "My" on the front. The only copy I know of in a dj of any sort, this is a look at a period of history from a perspective few people have ever had. $75.00

TED SCOTT DER OZEANFLIEGER (ACROSS THE OCEAN) -- Printed in Berlin, between 1930 and 1934, this is one of (at most) three titles from this series ever printed in German, and a rarity for having survived the war years, when many non-German books were destroed. No dj, but clean and solid beyond a small nick in the spine edge and base. Beautiful Gothic gold lettering on the cover, duo-tone-style frontespiece, many pen and ink illustrations, and printed in the same gorgeous Gothic style throughout. A wonderful find for any Ted Scott fan.  $35.00
