Economics 201
Computer Assignment #3
Due Date:
MWF December 1, 2004
TTH November 30
Assignments will NOT be accepted late
To obtain data for these assignments you can install the data and a needed Excel file by inserting the CD from the text and selecting "Install Data Analysis Plus and Data Files" or you can manually retrieve the data and file from the CD on an as needed basis. To do this manually, you will need to look under the folder called "manual install" which will have a sub-folder called "Keller6". Within the Keller6 folder there will be the two folders that you will need ("Data Analysis 4.0" and "Keller Data sets"). The Data Analysis 4.0 folder contains a file called "Stats.xls" which is needed for problem #1. The data needed for both problems #1 and #2 are located in the Keller Data sets folder in a sub-folder called Excel. The data are contained in the chapter folders.
- Use Microsoft Excel to estimate the confidence interval in problem 10.54 (page 313 of the text). See the example on page 306. [reminder: In order to use "Data Analysis Plus" you must load a file on the CD called "stats.xls" – it is a "macro" which you want to run]
- Construct a hypothesis test for exercise 13.33 on page 409 of the text (assume a
= 0.05). Draw a diagram of the distribution of the test statistic to show the rejection and non-rejection regions (be sure to label the axis and the test values). Use Microsoft Excel to compute the statistics that will help you draw your conclusion (Hint: there are examples in the text.) In order to determine if the population variance is equal or unequal, compute summary statistics and compare the sample variances. Once you have computed the necessary statistics, perform the prescribed tasks on separate sheet(s) of paper. Provide printouts of your computed statistics.

- Use Microsoft Excel to perform exercise 18.27 a, b, c, & d on pg. 626 of the text. For part c be sure to construct the hypothesis test and draw a diagram of the distribution of the test statistic to show the rejection and non-rejection regions (be sure to label the axis and the test values).
