SOME EVENTS THAT HAPPENED DURING 2003Books I read this yearWe bought a house in Corrales, NM. We are planning to move into the house during the summer of 2005. Click for pictures of the house. February 22 -23rd I attended a mini Robert A Millikan high school reunion. Monty turned 60 in April! I got to have two birthday parties. One at the beginning of the month when Sabina and family came out for a visit. And one at the end of the month when Joe came down from Stanford for the weekend. April 29th Dori delivered her third baby, another girl and named her Dejanara. May 11th, Mother's Day I proposed to Margaret that we get married. I did this while at a Mother's Day dinner at Peohes. Margaret's mom and sister (who were out for a visit for the seek) along with Christa, Jim, Christa's mom, Jim's mom and another couple who were friend's of Christa were all present when the proposal occurred. She accepted. We have decided to have the wedding in San Diego May 30, 2004. In August we visited Margaret's Ohio Family Farm near Youngstown, Ohio. Margaret went to a high school reunion. And of course, we are going to attend the Canfield County Fair (click for pictures). September 16-27 we went to Helena, MT for a NAPAS board meeting. After that we drove through Glacier and Yellowstone National Parks. Then we spent a couple nights in Laramie followed by 3 days at the Old Corral Hotel in Centennial, WY. For a more complete description click here Aaron & Katrina with Drake and Brook moved to Boulder, CO. This October they had a new baby girl. December 9th Joe defended his research and will finish his graduate work at Stanford this winter. Sabina, I and Margaret were among the attendees to cheer him. Basil and Jessica were there too! SOME EVENTS THAT HAPPENED DURING 2002Books I read this yearJanuary 2 - Family dinner with dad and Betty at Westbay (dad’s current favorite restaurant). In attendance were: Craig & Margaret; Dennise, Jessica, Aaron & Katrina with Drake and Brook; Nick & Tamera with Trinity. January 16 - Street demonstration in front of state government offices on Front Street in San Diego to raise awareness about “the Olmstead decision.” February 7 – 11 - Sacramento (7 –8), Redding (9 – 10), and Sacramento (11). During this visit to Sacramento I spent some time with Jerry (the husband of one Margaret’s colleagues and we went for a bike ride along the American river). February 16 – 18 – Los Alamos, we found a “Southwest rapid reward” ticket that had to be used before the end on the month so we used that plus some credit we had to fly to Albuquerque. We rented a convertible and drove up to Los Alamos with the top down. Had fun visit with Sabina & Terry, grandkids Jacob & Gabriel and Dennise and Basil. March 7 – 10 – Three days in Los Angeles for PAI training and retreat. We stayed at the LAX Holiday Inn that had a great weight/exercise room. There was a fun dinner and dance on Friday. March 24 IEP day at San Diego University for Margaret to give a session to parents of children with special needs. Then we changed into my truck and drove out to Corral Canyon to join a 4WD club outing. We did not catch up with them until the end of the day, but we got to drive on some fun 4WD roads. March 28 Dennise came out for a week. She stayed with Jessica and dad. She and I met on the 28th to talk and shop for dad’s birthday. We got him some CD’s of Bing and Perry and the like. March 31 We had a birthday/Easter dinner with dad at a Chinese restaurant, of all places, because his normal favorite wasn’t open. April 4 Dinner at café “W” and off-Broadway play, "The Caretaker", at the 6th & Penn stage. April 18 - 22 We flew Frontier airlines to Washington DC for a NAPAS board meeting. April 26th & May 15th The San Diego office of Protection & Advocacy, Inc. moved out of our loft and into a real office at 1111 6th Ave. on May 15th and Margaret is the managing attorney. It took about 1.5 years to obtain office space. They put in bids on 3 locations which were in the right price range and location. The first landlord just refused to talk with them, the second said that they were unacceptable tenants, and the third accepted them after 6 months of negotiation. Then it took 4 months to complete the build-out. It seemed that certain elements of San Diego didn't want the office to open! The Open House was held April 26th. Since April 15th was the original move-in date, invitations went out for that date. They held the open house in the building lobby. JUNE 8th AARON and KATRINA'S WEDDING. The ceremony and associated social functions were held at Louie and Belinda's "Cave Springs Motel" in Dunsmuir, CA. The event had a renaissance period motif and all the guests also came in costume to add to the 'color' of the party. June 23 - 30 Margaret, Dorene and Jennie (Margaret's sister and mother), Dennise, and I took an Alaskan cruise . We were on the "Vision of the Seas" (Royal Caribbean Lines) and sailed the inside passage. Ports of Call: Vancouver, B.C., Hubbard Glacier, Skagway, Juneau, Ketchikan, and Misty Fjords. August 27th to Sept 1st we visited Margaret's Ohio Family Farm near Youngstown, Ohio. We picked up Dorene and Tony drove to the farm and spent the week attending the Canfield County Fair and enjoying the farm. September 19 -23rd traveled to New Orleans for a NAPAS board meeting and an enjoyable visit to the city. November 22 - December 1st I rented a Lincoln town car and we drove to Los Alamos for Thanksgiving. On the way we stopped for 2 nights in Sedona at, Country Gardens Bed & Breakfast, a beautiful B&B. Then we shopped for a house in Albuquerque for a couple days. Joe flew in and we picked him and drove to Sabina's for thanksgiving. Christmas, 2002 we stayed in San Diego. Margaret's mom flew out from Ohio and we actually got a Christmas tree. We went to see a production of the "Christmas Carol" and had Christmas Eve dinner with Christa and her mom. New Year's we flew to Los Alamos and spent the eve with Sabina, Terry, Dennise and the kids.
SOME EVENTS THAT HAPPENED IN 2001
Activity ReportsChristmas, 2001 at Bahia de los AngelesMargaret and I spent from December 22nd to the 30th with Joe and Kin (Joe’s roommate at Sanford) in Baja, CA. Joe and Kin drove down from Sanford on Thursday the 20th to spend a day in Los Angeles with Kin’s brother. After they got to SD on Sat., we loaded the truck, the boys jumped in the back with the luggage, and we started driving south. It took us about 6 hours to drive the 200 miles to San Quintin where we spent the first night. Sunday we went 24 miles to El Rosario to fill the gas tank, there were no gas stations for the next 364 miles (El Rosario to Bahia de los Angeles and back to El Rosario). By sundown of that day, we had covered the 218 miles from San Quintin to Bahia de los Angeles and had seen the most unusual vegetation in my life. Bahia de los Angeles is a small town of about 350 residents with no phone service (except satellite phones, not cell phones) all electricity was generated on site and everything except fish was “trucked-in”. It is a genuinely beautiful bay surrounded by 16 islands. Sunrise, looking across the bay at the islands with water glassy smooth was breathtakingly beautiful. The closest island is only about 3 miles from shore and only about a 40-minute kayak ride. It is a wonderfully quiet (the first night we couldn’t sleep because of the lack of noise) place for water activities, hiking, and exploring the desert vegetation. Christmas morning we opened presents at a nice little café, Costa del Sol and we were the only customers, and it was very pleasant. That night we had an extensive “American-style” Christmas dinner prepared by Raquel of Raquel & Larry's Motel where we were staying . In order to get to the second floor dinning room, we had pull Margaret up a long flight of stairs (she really didn’t like coming down the stairs). As a rule places in Mexico are not very accessible, which is why we brought her manual “off-road” chair (rigid frame, suspension and fat tires). It also helped having the two young men to help with the lifting. To see some pictures of the trip click here. |
