Jane Bathori
The Complete Solo Recordings
[Marston 51009-2]

(see http://www.marstonrecords.com/bathori/bathori_tracks.htm for complete track listing)

Like her French compatriot Claire Croiza, soprano Jane Bathori (1877-1970) became one of the foremost exponents of French art song after a successful career in the opera house. In addition to being an accomplished pianist, Bathori directed the Theatre du Vieux Colombiers from 1914-1918.

This beautifully produced release features all of Bathori’s solo recordings including works by composers who admired her musical taste and artistry: Milhaud, Debussy and Ravel. Bathori displays an uncanny intellectual insight that enables her to meld word into song. With passion underpinned by earnest musical instinct she creates memorable sound pictures that pique one’s imagination.

For me it is the last four selections that best show Bathori’s ability to weave an enchanting spell of rapt drama. Debussy’s “C’est l’extase” is sung in an introverted, stream-of-consciousness manner. Her voice traces the melody with girlish abandon. An incisive humor pervades her rendition of “La tour de Saint Jacques” by Darcier. Bernard’s “Ca fait peur aux oiseux” is graced with an engaging wistfulness. The zest of her “Six chansons francaises” by Tailleferre is quite invigorating.

As usual with Marston’s fine product, Ward Marston’s audio restoration is top-notch. There are no texts/translations. The excellent liner notes are written by the late Victor Girard who adds his personal reminiscences of the great singer.
