Computer Name Service

  • Displays the computer name, IP address, subnet mask, time, system uptime, processes & threads, CPU usage, RAM, and page file information on the default and logon desktop.
  • Very small.
  • Individual counters can be turned on / off.

The idea for this utility came from the desire to have something that combines UpTime 2000 and NameTag from http://opus80.com/discnode and have it appear on the winlogon desktop (the ctrl-alt-del to logon screen). The IP Address / subnet was added to make it easier to collect subnet boundaries for SMS from users that can't type ipconfig. This app is quite useful for sysadmins that need to get the computer name from the user in order to initiate a remote control session.

Drop me a note if you would like to contribute to adding features to CNS.

System Requirements
  • Windows XP / 2000 / NT 4.0

(Some counters do not work on NT 4.0 right now. Okay, almost all of them don't work. )

Usage Notes
  • CNS.exe is installed into the winnt\system32 directory because it is a service and runs as the local system account.
  • Transparency on Windows NT 4.0 has no effect.
  • You can drag the window around in transparent mode by hovering right over the text - the mouse will change to a cross when it can be moved.
  • Settings are automatically saved.
  • Page file counter may be fuxored, drop me a note if it is not accurate on a Windows 2000 machine.
  • Blank counters could mean that you do not have the PerfOS perflib loaded. Use the Exctrlst.exe utility from the Windows 2000 resource kit to turn it on.
  • You will be *very* much annoyed if you do not use a mono-spaced font, the window will resize itself every refresh.
Probable Future Enhancements
  • Selectable network adapter.
  • Remember highest uptime.
  • System tray icon.
  • Option to change the time interval between information refresh.
  • Option to choose what order counters appear in and formatting options (like right justify).
  • Tabbed dialog for settings (that right-click menu is a wee bit crowded).
  • Fix NT 4.0 counters.
  • Selectable background color.

Got some ideas? Let me know.
