Day 52 - August 4, 1998
Williamsburg, VA to Yorktown, VA -13 miles
Temperature 87 degrees.

After a late night I slept in until 8:30, dressed in my bike shorts and shirt for the last time and headed, with a Powerbar to tide me over, to Yorktown. The trail follows the Colonial Parkway which is lightly traveled and commercial traffic is prohibited. It wanders through the forest and across marsh land until it reaches the Chesapeake Bay and runs along the Bay into Yorktown. The Transamerica Bike Trail ends at the Yorktown Victory Monument which celebrates Cornwallis' surrender to Washington and Rochambeau. The town of York is well restored and the national park there does an excellent job of interpreting that wonderful history. There is a good website for both Yorktown and Jamestown, abandoned early because of its swampy location, at http://www.historyisfun.org/.

I had a sandwich at the Yorktown Pub only 150 feet from the water and then headed across the street to dip my wheel in the Chesapeake. A sunbather took my picture and called me crazy. At 2:30 I rode back 13 miles to Williamsburg, showered, dressed and delivered my bike to Bikesmith Bicycle Shop down the street for packing and shipment home. So long sukka!!

I am full of different emotions right now, happy to be done, but sure I will miss the routine that I had become accustomed to every day. I am not positive, in any case, I want my old routine back. Doing something somewhat repetitively for a couple of months like this gives one a lot of time to think and reflect. Now I need to digest and even enjoy the accomplishment for a day or so. I am grateful for the time I was given to do this by my wife, business, and friends and realize that not everyone is afforded the same luxury. I am a lucky guy.

Tonight I am going into Colonial Williamsburg to find some GOOD food and drink on foot and see how that feels. Tomorrow more exploration and dinner with my friend Hatley Mason who now works and lives in Richmond. I will try to collect my thoughts and write my overall impressions in the next day or so. Thanks to all of you that have stayed in touch electronically. Because I did this on my own, it helped to have a "chat" in the evening with friends.

I do not know how we did on fundraising yet but hope I was able in some small way to bring attention to the need for more economic attention to our woeful funding situation in the Sacramento arts and culture scene. We all need to try harder. If you have not pledged, do so. You will feel good about it. For those of you who pledged, thank you very much. Your contribution WILL make a difference. For those that sponsored by the mile the final tally was 4350 in rough numbers. The trail is 4200 but I got lost sometimes or took detours. There were some times that my odometer failed to operate but whose really counting.

Road Kill Report:
Nada. They keep the Colonial Parkway pretty clean.

Playlist:
I listened to classical music today. Soothing to the finish.

No lawn ornaments in this Disneyish historical interpretive area.
