Where I’m From

I am from teen magazines

and a lonely shoe, looking for its other;

I am from lost homework papers and

colorful hair ties

I am from drooping flowers, trampled on by squirrels;

from lemons and tomatoes, waiting to be picked;

I am from diet coke cans;

and from trees, reaching into the heavens

I am from little kids, playing hide-and-go-seek;

from dogs barking up trees, chasing a squirrel;

I am from deserted leaves, waiting;

from gum wrappers, dropped without a care in the world

I am from Great-Grandma Forrestelle,

waiting to see what’s going to happen next;

I am from Dawda, swimming in the navy,

thinking only about others, not about himself

I am from “don’t scream!” and

“don’t leave your crap lying around” –

you can tell when my Dad is mad

I am from “don’t hit your sisters!” and

“Meghan do this…Meghan do that” –

don’t make my Mom mad

I am from homemade pecan pie,

which I spend hours on cooking to perfection;

from delicious fruit salad,

and wobbly green jelly, saying “eat me eat me”

I am from yummy Sees Candies, all containing caramel

I am from pictures stored high up in my closet,

waiting to be looked at over and over again, remembering;

I am from jewelry, belonging to my ancestors;

and I am from stuffed animals,

who have kept me safe and warm forever!
