Job Description

U. S. Bureau of Land Management

The U. S. Bureau of Land Management is now accepting applications for summer wild land fire
fighting positions. The deadline for early consideration for employment is Feb. 19, but applications
are accepted until July 30.

"We will be filling 30 vacancies in duty stations across northern California," said Linda Hansen,
manager of the BLM's Eagle Lake Field Office in Susanville. "There are positions open on fire
engine crews, ground crews, a helicopter crew and on the Diamond Mountain Hotshots."

Hansen said those hoping to land a position should turn in their applications by the Feb. 19 deadline.
Applications are available at BLM offices in Susanville, Alturas, Cedarville and Arcata. They should
be returned to BLM's California State Office at the address shown on the application.

In northern California, BLM's wildland firefighters are stationed in Susanville, Ravendale, West
Valley (near Likely), Cedarville, and at the King Range National Conservation Area on the North
Coast. Seasonal firefighters are employed for the length of the fire season, usually from mid May to
mid October. They fight fires and work on prescribed fire projects throughout California, and are
sometimes assigned to fires in other parts of the United States.

Fire fighting is a physically demanding job, and applicants must be in good physical condition. All

Essential Job Functions:  Plan, prioritize, assign, supervise and review the work of staff responsible for providing fire suppression, emergency medical services and emergency rescue, and hazardous material response for Fire Services.  Coordinate operations and activities at multiple fire stations within a battalion; participate in the development and implementation of goals, objectives, policies and priorities; identify resource needs; recommend and implement policies and procedures; serve as incident commander at fire scenes; participate in training, motivating and evaluating Firefighters and Public Safety Officers; provide or coordinate staff training; implement or recommend discipline as appropriate.  Ideal candidate will possess the ability to effectively manage incidents.
Requires:  Education equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade.  Ten (10) years of fire protection experience.
License or Certification:  Possession of a valid Texas driver’s license, EMT certification from the Texas Department of Health, Texas Commission Advanced Fire protection Certificate, EMS Instructor certification from the Texas Department of Health, and Hazardous Materials Technician certification.
Battalion Commander duties range from those of Fire Captain to Deputy Chief in a traditional department.  Position is Monday through Friday 8-5.
Salary is $4,680.53/month plus benefits.
