This site is one of a very few that talks about and promotes the use of Patterdale Terriers to hunt varmints. The Patterdale Terrier is considered one of the rarest breed of dogs in the United States. Some people are using them strictly as pets while the real interest and use of Patterdale Terriers lay with the hunter or wanna be hunter. I got interested in the breed trying to find an alternative to the Pit Bull Terrier I had as a kid. I wanted to get a dog that had grit and brains. However, the dog could not be aggressive to other dogs or people. I looked at the other breeds of Terriers available including the Airedale Terrier, Jack Russell Terrier, Wire Hair Fox Terrier, and the Jadg Terrier. I started considering what I wanted to do with the dog. I knew I wanted to hunt Fox, Raccoon, Possum, Ground Hogs, Rats, and other varmints.

After serious consideration of these other breeds, I found out about the Patterdale Terrier and never looked back. I own two dogs now. A black bitch that is very intense when hunting 14 inches and 17 lbs, and a black and tan male that can go just about anywhere due to his small size. He is only 12 inches tall and 12 lbs. He is very hand spannable and has a good nose. He is available for stud.
