ABOUT ME
Hello, and welcome.  Here's a new bio page for a new millennium! My old bio page quickly became outdated.  Amazing how things change in just a short year! Follow this link if you would like to see my old (slightly bitter??) essay/bio.  I am sorry if you find tons of misspellings and grammatical errors. My excuse is that I often edit the html code from Netscape composer's edit feature, so I don't get to use "spell check"...OK??  If this is your first time here, you can read this short bio used for a group show.  It pretty much sums things up:

"Raul's creativity got a jump start by watching TV and reading way too many comic books back in his native Mexico.  As a result, Raul injects his work with the retro style of the Pink Panther, Periquita, the romantic serial revista Lagrimas, risas y amor, Rarotonga, El Pecado de Oyuki and the gender bending Gabriel y Gabriela. He sculpts powdered sugar, corn starch and food coloring into sickening eye candy loaded with poisoned kitsch and rasquachismo. Keep your kids away from it! Raul's paintings, installations, figurines and paper doll designs may be just a preview of decadence to come in this new brave fin de siglo".
THE WORK I DO
I work in a variety of media, but my favorite medium is painting.  I work mainly with acrylics on canvas and designer gouache on paper.  For collages, ensembleges and sculpture I use paper mache and polymer clay.  If you want to know more about my illustrations and digital work, go to my other page Cool Raul's graphics on the net.  I am also an art consultant for a variety of creative and visual art projects.  Collaborations with other artists and commissions are always welcome.  Are you in need of a one of a kind gift? Are you a restaurant or business owner in need of funky decor? Are you a window dresser looking for one of a kind props?  If you are, then why don't you drop me a line!? I would love to work with you!  Here's a selected list of clients and the type of work I've done for them.

The Michael Lawrence Company, San Francisco - Design, digital art and Illustration.
The San Francisco Public Library - Lecture, hands on activity for kids. Crafts for the day for the dead.
Mission High School, San Francisco - Cultural competency and the arts.  Day of the dead lecture.
Center for the arts/San Francisco Mayor's Office - Holiday party/Hands on activity for kids.  Holiday paper crafts.
Baja Cantina, San Francisco - Day of the dead installation and visual merchandising.
Studio 24 - visual merchandising, gift design.

MY STYLE

I think my style is eclectic, funky, queer, and definitely inspired by my Mexican heritage.  I like to use color at full blast, but at the same time combine it with macabre themes and lots of shadow play.  Because of that, sometimes I describe it as "Mexican Noir" or "Folk art with a twist".  Some of the recurring themes that show up in my work are:

Skeletons/Days of the dead
Dogs
Angels and demons
Funky/Pop/Retro inspired themes
Sexy men and women
Exotic and tropical themes
Icons
