Welcome to the Maxson Road House. While you are here you will see the past and get a glimpse of the future through these photos on our website. So come on in grab a chair, sit down and make yourself at home while Gene tells you a little bit about the Road House.

The Maxson Road House began in 1994 with an event I called "The Thank God I Got Out of That Relationship Party and Show". It featured a band called The Curbfeelers and started a trend. From there we went to our present format of a Blues show every year since. In September of 1995 the late King Ernest made his debut here with the South El Monte Blues Band. Our Spring 1996 show featured BB Chung King and the BuddaHeads. We followed that up in Summer of 1996 with Flattop Tom and his Jumpcats. In 1997 we had the band called Cid. Monica and the Mercenaries played here in 1998 and King Ernest and Finis Tasby played in 1999. In the year 2000 we had the return of Cid. 2001 featured our neighbors the Delgado Brothers along with their special guest Teresa James. The year 2002 saw Big 'Rockin' Daddy and the Usual Suspects tear the place up with help from Flattop Tom, Monica Kitzerow and Magic Li and introduced a young band then called the Jr. All Stars. In 2003 this young band opened the show as Southern Lights which featured a set by Monica Kitzerow and showcased the South El Monte Horns. For the 2003 show we assembled the South El Monte Blues Band from past veterans Steve Omalev, Bruce King, Jerry Lee Luithle and Pat Salvador on sax. Also on the bill were very special guests Johnnie Dyer ,L.A. Jones and Rich DelGrosso. Last year, in 2004, we brought Johnnie Dyer back with the Blues Pharaohs to headline and Kelly’s Lot was the opening band. Our very special guests were Teresa James and Terry Wilson.

Well another year has passed and memories of last week’s party are still fresh in our minds and what great ones they are! First there was the work party on Friday when our hard core volunteers came over and set up the stage, tables, sound, and chairs, etc. It wasn’t all work though as we soon fired up the grill and were able to spend some time together which is rare at the Saturday party. Saturday came soon enough though and the late arriving crowd was thin but appreciative when the Jumping Jack Benny Blues Band took command of the stage at 4pm with their version of high energy blues. Front man Benny Cortez, led band members Roy Quick, Tony Fingers, Leo Valenzuela and Adrian Mongue through a maze of songs on their way to fully satisfying the ever growing crowd. The band finished their set with a rousing song by Flattop Tom much to everyone’s delight. The following dinner hour provided us with an opportunity to feast on the extensive array of food on the pot luck tables and enjoy a beverage of our choice while chatting up fellow party people. The 7 o’clock hour brought the young singer Liela to the stage who proceeded to quickly make it her own as she belted her way through top jazz and blues classics like a veteran. She had the crowd mesmerized as she joined with her top notch band of dad John Avila, Woody Aplanalp aka Papa Woody, Johnny "Vatos" Hernandez and Mike Bolger to win over many new fans with a wonderfully magical set. After a short set up period the night’s headliners, Southern Lights, invaded the now crowded Maxson Road House, with a highly energized five hour set that included many old time favorites made to sound new again. Leading the assault was drummer Andy Avila whose vocals pierced the night air while brother Danny Avila pounded his bass relentlessly as dad Sammy Avila wailed away on his trusty B3. Joining the band for this performance was Philip Sayce ,who amazed all with his rapid fire guitar wizardry and intense vocals, and Brother Ray Solis manipulating a large array of percussion instruments. This marathon session included a late night jam featuring the likes of Edgar Winter’s touring drummer Mike Leasure along with a number of as yet undiscovered local talent and a midnight set by the Avila Brothers Band with brother Danny playing lead guitar. The jammin’ continued until nearly 2am at which point the leftover crowd proceeded to eat and drink until almost 4:30am when I politely threw them out. Good night, lights out and see ya next year!
