A look into the lives of the Devons who live with
the Perry's by the sea. And those with wings
that are still around us.
Why did we choose to have the wonderful Devon Rex Breed to be part of our lives?
My sons Justin, Travis, and myself have allergies, and asthma. Before kids I always
had a menagerie of pets. I thank my parents from when I was a child for allowing so many
furry, and fish scaled creatures to be part of our family while growing up. Fritz the cat,
Scuby, Zivago, Baby, Tanya, Lady, and all the fish tanks, the birds, the hamsters, and
lizards, I miss them.
For the last 25 years my wonderful husband Michael has indulged my need to have animals be
part of our lives. My love of animals over ruled my allergies. Stray's would find me and
knew I couldn't say no. Butterflies, and Hummingbirds often land on me or close by. Such
magical and fascinating flights of flutter. So my need for animals to be around me is strong.
When My first son Justin was born, his allergies were far worse then mine. I found a loving
home at that time for our Cockatiel "Big Bird". Prior to Justin's birth my sweet little dog
"Scuby" the best Heinz 57 ever, at age 16 earned his wings, and to this day I feel he is around
me.
Our cat Shadow abandoned at birth in our backyard by a scared feral cat, was really our
first child. She got her wings when Justin was 3 weeks old. I like to believe she is his
guardian angel. Or maybe it was fate knowing that my children would not be able to have
furry pets? It would have been to hard to give her up. As time went on Justin kept asking for a
pet. But he had an allergic reaction as soon as he petted a dog or cat. He had a lot of stuffed
animals that probably did not help his allergies either. It just wasn't the same as a real kitty
or puppy. When my second child Travis was born I had two against one, constantly asking for a
pet. One day I remember Justin made me call his Dad at work. We got his voice mail and Justin left him
a message "Daddy I want a kitty, a kitty Daddy, can you bring me home a kitty?"
We added a few members to our home but not of the fur kind. We raised Preying Mantids, African
Walking Sticks, a Coned snail, Butterflies, and a Giant Madagascar Hissing Cock Roach. Yes you
read that right! What was I thinking? We also had an Anole, and tree Frogs.
We had a fish tank, and we still have Dozer 13 years later! But even with all of this, it still
was not the same as having a buddy, that you could curl up with. One to tell your secrets to, and
one that gives you back so much of their unconditional love.
Thank goodness for the internet, the search began for the possibility of a cat that our allergies
might tolerate. We went to the library, we went to pet stores, and there the Salesman
suggested I look through Cat Fancy magazine. He mentioned a Breed of Cat called Devon Rex.
I bought the magazine, and in it there were breeders listed, and there was one local. I made
a phone call. The breeder, Carole Goodwin of Rex-N-Fx Devon Rex, said we could come visit her
cattery, and see if my kids would have an allergic reaction to her Devon's.
Well what can I say, but it was love at first sight!
So begins the story of Chiffon, Velvet, Alura, and Summer:
